A Maine Conservation Corps trail crew is now working at Underwood Springs Forest!

The crew recently spent a week doing some major trail work at Community Park, including building 29 wooden steps into a notoriously steep and slippery hillside along the trail. At USF they will focus on building turnpikes, or raised gravel trail sections, to help with drainage in wet areas. This will help make the trails more resilient to all different kinds of weather. Be sure to say hi and thank the crew if you see them out working!

Image description: background photo of a trail in the woods. There is newly dumped gravel in between long wooden 4x6 beams on either side of the trail along with other tools. There is a yellow caution sign at the top of the photo that says, "Caution: Trail Work Ahead... Again!"

During Parks & Rec Month, we are celebrating the staff at Falmouth Parks & Community Programs. Meet Kate Harris (if you have not already!). Kate has served as Recreation Coordinator for 22 years! She organizes some of Falmouth’s most beloved community events, including the tree lighting and concerts in the park. Everyone seems to know Kate, and Kate seems to know everyone in Falmouth--by name! "Best description I can say for what I do is I wear MANY hats," says Kate. From Ski programs, to trips abroad, to summer camps, Kate creates programs and experiences that bring residents together to gather, celebrate, and get to know each other and their community. As we continue to celebrate Parks and Recreation month, let’s talk about the Power of Play. Today we highlight Falmouth Parks & Community Programs Assistant Director Matt Gilbert who has worked for the Town of Falmouth for 27 years! Matt maintains operations at the Mason-Motz Activity Center and handles all the scheduling for staff, athletics, and facilities. He works as a liaison with the school department, youth sports groups, and many other organizations. "As we enter the summer months," Matt says, "my hope is that I see many of our Falmouth residents using the abundant acreage of Falmouth’s parks and open spaces to enjoy nature, get outside, and no matter your age, play.” Are you ready to play?
