Come to our Annual Meeting in the Russell Room of Falmouth Memorial Library on Saturday, October 18th, at 1:30 p.m. and hear about the destruction of our town center by the British on October 18th, 1775. While the “shot heard round the world” rang out in Lexington, Concord, and Arlington, Patriots and the Crown faced off in Falmouth’s town center (now Portland’s Old Port). Six months later, Lt. Mowatt of the Royal Navy set the Old Port ablaze. A brief business meeting required by our bylaws will follow the presentation.

Two Lights for Tomorrow is a nation-wide commemoration of Paul Revere’s famous ride. It uses the image of those two shining lights as a call to action to celebrate our nation’s founding. It calls for two lanterns (or other lights) to be displayed across the nation on April 18-19, 2025. The lights will be lit at the State House in Augusta, Falmouth Town Hall, and other town institutions in our town. All residents are encouraged to place two lights in a window of their home on the evenings of April 18-19.

April 21 is when Maine and Massachusetts celebrate Patriot’s Day, our holiday commemorating the “Shot Heard Round the World” at the battles of Lexington, Concord, and Menotomy.

250 Years Ago: Redcoats March on Salem

Within the colonial Province of Massachusetts Bay, resentment against heavy-handed British rule was growing. Life in Falmouth was relatively calm, but resistance by colonists in and around Boston was becoming heated.

Royal Governor Thomas Gage ordered Lieutenant Colonel Robert Leslie to seize munitions held by insurrectionists at Salem. Seventeen twelve-pound cannon were of special concern.

On February 26th, a Sunday morning, Lt. Col. Leslie and his 64th Regiment of Foot sailed from Fort William in Boston Harbor to Marblehead where they went ashore and marched to Salem. Word of the redcoats' landing preceded them. They were delayed at New Mills because the bridge over South River had been wrecked. They proceeded to a drawbridge over North River only to find it raised, preventing their advance. Flatboats in the river were scuttled by their owners to prevent crossing by boat. A hostile crowd from Salem and surrounding towns formed. During the ensuing standoff, a compromise was negotiated. The drawbridge was lowered and Leslie was allowed to cross only to find that the cannon had been removed. It was growing dark and the hostile crowd was growing. Leslie marched his regiment back to Marblehead from which they sailed back to Boston. A bloody confrontation was averted... for now.

250 Years Ago: Parliament Declares Massachusetts to be in a State of Rebellion!

In February 1775, Parliament declared Massachusetts (which then included Maine) to be in a state of rebellion. This permitted soldiers to shoot suspected rebels. King George III responded by sending more ships and soldiers to the upstart colony.
