Silky Willow 🌿 (Salix sericea)

This willow has thin, silvery-green leaves with a silky texture that give this tree its name. In the wild, it is found in riparian areas, so it prefers moist to wet soils.

Narrow-leaved Fireweed 🔥 (Chamerion angustifolium)

Narrow-leaved Fireweed gets its name from its tendency to readily populate areas disturbed by fire. Spreading by both seeds and rhizomes, it can easily fill in space in the garden. The flowers can be made into pink fireweed jelly!

From protecting shorelines, supporting renewable energy, reducing pollution, and bolstering land use planning policies, there were plenty of wins for wildlife in the second session of the 132nd Maine Legislature, which wrapped up recently. Read Maine Audubon Advocacy Director Francesca Gundrum's op-ed in the Portland Press Herald, giving an overview of our work.

Maine Audubon’s advocacy team testified on 106 individual bills in Maine’s 132nd Legislature, a new record, and our members, supporters and volunteers sent thousands of individual messages to state lawmakers or added their names to petitions.

Here are five important wins for Maine wildlife this session.

From the Naturalist's Almanac: ATLANTIC HORSESHOE CRABS (Limulus polyphemus) are 450 million-year-old arthropods with nine eyes. They use their fragile tails, called telsons, to right themselves when flipped over by waves. You may have heard that spawning peaks during the highest spring tides, but we’re learning that water temperature may be a bigger factor. Look for Atlantic Horseshoe Crabs mating on sandy beaches and mud flats in May and June.
