The Northern Virginia Ragtime Society (NVRS) was founded in December 1979 for the purpose of promoting an interest in classical ragtime and related forms of music. The Society takes a broad view of ragtime to include various forms of music composed during the Ragtime era [1897-1917] as well as types that evolved from, or developed out of, classical ragtime; such as jazz, blues, gospel, novelty, bo

ogie-woogie, stride and syncopated piano. Postal Service to issue a commemorative stamp honoring Scott Joplin, the King of Ragtime Composers. The issuance of the Joplin stamp proved the catalyst for the rebirth of the Scott Joplin Ragtime Festival in Sedalia, MO. Amongst the pianists who've performed for the society over the years: Dick Hyman, Frederick Hodges, Peter Mintun, Brian Holland, Jeff & Ann Barnhart, Virginia Tichenor & Marty Eggers, Terry Parrish, Scott Kirby, Glenn Jenks, Mimi Blais, the late John Arpin (Canada), Bob Seeley, Sonny Leyland, Tom Brier, local syncopator, Alex Hassan, along with an up-and-coming younger generation of ticklers, including Stephanie Trick, Adam Swanson and Max Keenlyside.
