MDPD’s Humanitarian Intervention in Al Fasher During the Second Half of 2026

Since June 1, 2026, the humanitarian intervention of Malam Darfur Peace and Development (MDPD) in Al Fasher has entered a new and challenging phase. One of the most pressing challenges has been the need to sustain humanitarian assistance, given the growing dependence of large numbers of the city’s residents on the food support provided by MDPD. At the same time, the steady increase in the city’s population has created an urgent need to expand the scale of humanitarian intervention, alongside emerging priorities in other sectors, including health, education, and livelihood programs.
During the first third of June 2026, MDPD continued its intervention, despite significant challenges, to maintaining its humanitarian response at the same level sustained over the previous six months, particularly through the continued operation of its community kitchens. Abu Shouk community kitchen continued to provide daily meals to more than 5,000 people, while the mobile kitchen expanded its reach to Abuja IDP Camp, Thawra North neighborhoods, and the four Al-Nasr neighborhoods, serving daily meals to more than 2,000 people. As a result, the total number of beneficiaries reached more than 7,000 people every day.

December 1, 2025 – May 31, 2026: Six Months of Continuous Humanitarian Response in Al Fasher
On December 1, 2025, Malam Darfur Peace and Development (MDPD) delivered its first food aid convoy to Al Fasher, marking the beginning of its humanitarian response to the urgent appeals of those who remained in the city despite extremely difficult circumstances. By May 31, 2026, this humanitarian intervention had completed six uninterrupted months of service.
Over this period, the response evolved significantly in line with the steady increase in the city’s population, which grew from approximately 17,000 people to nearly 200,000 over the past six months. To meet these rapidly growing humanitarian needs, MDPD established two community kitchens providing daily meals to more than 7,000 people, while also operating a weekly food convoy delivering food baskets to 1,200 families.
Beyond the critical role this intervention has played in saving lives in Al Fasher, the impact of MDPD’s work over the past six months has also strengthened engagement with local communities in meaningful ways. One of the most encouraging outcomes has been the revival of volunteerism, with nearly 40 volunteers from among the beneficiaries actively supporting the delivery of assistance to those in need. At the same time, MDPD receives daily feedback from community members on how to improve and expand support to include other essential areas such as livelihoods, education, and health services.
On May 31, 2026, marking the sixth month of MDPD’s humanitarian response in Al Fasher, the Abu Shouk Community Kitchen provided daily meals to more than 5,000 people, while the mobile community kitchen served more than 2,000 people in Thawra North neighborhood, in addition to residents from nearby communities.

On the Second Day of Eid Al-Adha in Al Fasher: Strong Turnout at Abu Shouk Kitchen and the Mobile Kitchen Across the Four Al-Nasr Neighborhoods

The two community kitchens operated by Malam Darfur Peace and Development (MDPD) provided a meaningful opportunity for the people of Al Fasher to celebrate Eid Al-Adha together. The kitchens became welcoming spaces where families gathered to exchange Eid greetings and share a festive meal, preserving the spirit of togetherness that marks this blessed occasion despite the difficult circumstances facing the city.

Malam Darfur Peace and Development (MDPD) Continues Its Uninterrupted Humanitarian Response in Al Fasher Over the Past Three Days

As it has consistently done over the past six months, Malam Darfur Peace and Development (MDPD) has continued its daily humanitarian response in Al Fasher as part of its ongoing efforts to support the city’s most vulnerable communities.
During May 23, 24, and 25, 2026, MDPD successfully provided daily meals to nearly 7,000 people each day. Most beneficiaries are residents of the densely populated Abu Shouk area, in addition to Al Salam neighborhood, where the mobile community kitchen continues to operate these days before moving to another location, as part of MDPD’s efforts to deliver food assistance to as many people in need as possible across Al Fasher.

The weekly food convoy organized by Malam Darfur Peace and Development (MDPD) to Al Fasher has become an important humanitarian event that residents eagerly wait for each week. For many families, it represents the only consistent food supply reaching those in need without interruption. Our teams in Tawila and Al Fasher remain committed to sustaining this effort despite the many challenges, recognizing its vital role in saving lives and easing the suffering of vulnerable communities.
The importance of the food convoy lies in MDPD’s commitment to reaching people in areas beyond the coverage of the two community kitchens, including the crowded Abu Shouk Community Kitchen and the mobile kitchen. In addition, the food baskets distributed through the convoy contain essential food supplies sufficient to support a family for at least two weeks.
Due to the large number of targeted areas this time, covering ten neighborhoods across the city, the convoy carrying 1,200 food baskets was distributed over two full days to ensure support reached as many vulnerable families as possible.
On May 21, 2026, 300 families in the Aldaraga Alowla neighborhood received 300 food baskets. On May 22, our team distributed an additional 900 food baskets to 900 families across the neighborhoods of Shoba, Al-Thawra South, Makraka, Bringia, Al-Gabal, Al-Thawra North, Al-Manara, Al-Modarag, and Al-Riyadh.
Our team also observed vulnerable people arriving from Um Shigaira area, located in the southwestern outskirts of Al Fasher, and they too were able to receive food baskets as part of MDPD’s ongoing efforts to reach those most in need.

Al Fasher: Growing Demand for Mobile Kitchen Services and a Strengthening Spirit of Cooperation and Volunteering at Abu Shouk Kitchen

In just a few days, Malam Darfur Peace and Development (MDPD) will mark six continuous months of working to save the lives of tens of thousands of vulnerable people in Al Fasher through emergency food assistance.
Throughout this vital humanitarian mission, MDPD has witnessed many encouraging signs within the community, especially the deep appreciation for the support provided and the growing spirit of volunteering, with community members helping every day to prepare and distribute meals to those in need.
At the same time, the mobile community kitchen has given MDPD an important opportunity to better understand the needs of residents across Al Fasher’s neighborhoods. This is reflected in the steadily increasing number of beneficiaries who gather each day to receive meals.
On May 22, 2026, the number of people served by the mobile kitchen in Al Salam neighborhood increased to more than 1,500 individuals, while the Abu Shouk Community Kitchen continued providing daily meals to more than 5,000 people at its location in one of the city’s most densely populated areas.

While continuing to provide food assistance to the residents of Al Fasher, Malam Darfur Peace and Development is gaining a deeper understanding of the city’s other urgent and essential needs.

Through daily engagement with beneficiaries of the food assistance programs, people consistently and urgently express the need for additional critical services. Beyond increasing food support, residents continue to highlight the importance of access to education and healthcare, both of which remain essential priorities for the well-being and resilience of the community.
On May 20, 2026, the Abu Shouk Community Kitchen continued its daily operations, providing meals to more than 5,000 people. Meanwhile, the mobile kitchen concluded its fourth day in Al Shakereen neighborhood, serving daily meals to more than 1,600 people before moving on to support beneficiaries in another area of the city.
