Wildfires: Patient Protection, Evacuation, and Health Effects

Topics include patient protection, evacuation planning, continuity of care, wildfire smoke health effects, and healthcare preparedness during wildfire events.

When wildfire risk rises, readiness saves lives. Join the next session where experts will share promising practices for protecting patients, planning for evacuations, and strengthening wildfire response.

The June 9 session entitled “Wildfires: Patient Protection, Evacuation, and Health Effects” is part of a regular, monthly series, occurring from 12:00-1:15 PM ET on the second Tuesday of every month.

Participation is free, but registration is required. One hour of Continuing Medical Education, Continuing Nursing Education, and Continuing Education for Emergency Medical Services credits are available to participants who attend the live sessions and fill out a brief survey. As we close out 2026 – Improving Outcomes, Together – we are proud to share that Hawaii is the recipient of the 2nd Annual State EMS Office Excellence Award – State EMS Office of the Year. 🌺🚑

The Hawaii State Department of Health Emergency Medical Services and Injury Prevention Systems Branch earned this national recognition for the ALOHA HealthLink Initiative, a statewide emergency data modernization effort that connects 100% of EMS agencies, all trauma centers, all stroke hospitals, and Department of Defense partners on a single, interoperable data platform. This unified system supports real-time, two-way sharing of critical clinical information, strengthening care coordination and quality improvement for trauma, stroke, pediatric emergencies, and more across all islands.

Hawaii is the first state in the nation to fully integrate public, private, and military EMS and trauma systems into one EMS-to-hospital clinical data ecosystem, setting a new benchmark for emergency care interoperability. By reducing duplicative data entry and powering real-time performance dashboards, ALOHA HealthLink helps frontline EMS clinicians and hospital teams use data to improve care in the moments that matter most.

Congratulations to the 2026 State EMS Office Excellence Award recipients for Innovation — Indiana's Department of Homeland Security EMS Division and the U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Health Office of EMS — recognized by for their creative, impactful approaches to strengthening EMS systems and improving patient care.

NASEMSO congratulates the Connecticut Office of EMS, winner of the 2nd Annual Data-Driven Excellence Award for its Overdose Query Quality Improvement Initiative. This project strengthened the state's Statewide Opioid Reporting Directive by rigorously testing multiple query versions to better identify true opioid overdose cases in EMS data, with a refined query slated for implementation in spring 2026.🏆

On this Safety Day of we’re proud to recognize how Connecticut’s data-driven quality improvement is "Improving Outcomes, Together" by reducing false positives, enhancing near real-time overdose surveillance, and supporting smarter decisions for EMS, public health, healthcare, and law enforcement partners. NASEMSO was proud to participate in the Road to Zero Annual Meeting alongside many other organizations working toward one shared goal: eliminating roadway deaths.

As Road to Zero celebrates its 10th anniversary, the meeting brought together leaders from EMS, transportation, public health, trauma systems, law enforcement, and vehicle safety innovation to share strategies focused on saving lives.

One highlight of the day was seeing a paramedic featured as a headliner presenter during a national transportation safety meeting. 🚑 EMS perspectives continue to play an important role in shaping conversations around roadway safety, prevention, and patient outcomes.

From responder safety to innovative, data-driven prevention efforts, today’s discussions reinforced the power of collaboration in building safer systems and communities.
