Two productive days of collaboration and connection at the NASEMSO Great Lakes Fall Regional Meeting!

State EMS officials and partners gathered in Lansing, Michigan this week to share challenges, exchange ideas, and strengthen relationships across the region.

Highlights included mass gathering medicine in rural communities and onsite EMS support, pediatric readiness, highway safety partnerships, and partner updates.

The NHTSA Office of EMS will host an EMS Focus webinar on September 22 at 1:00 p.m. ET, focused on working with blood suppliers when developing a prehospital blood transfusion program.

🩸 Important research ahead for prehospital blood transfusion.

The University of Arizona has received approval for $30.6 million in research funding from PCORI to study the safety and effectiveness of prehospital blood transfusion for patients experiencing traumatic hemorrhagic shock.

Conducted in partnership with the Arizona Department of Health Services and participating EMS agencies, the study will help build the evidence needed to better understand when and where prehospital blood transfusion can most improve survival.

The findings could help inform future EMS clinical practice, system planning, and trauma care nationwide.

🚑 NASEMSO members in action in New Mexico!

We’re proud to see New Mexico EMS leaders Kyle Thornton, Christian “Mateo” Garcia, MD, and Liana Lujan bringing the State EMS and trauma perspective to the 2026 New Mexico Post Crash Care Summit.

Kyle shared an overview of New Mexico’s rapid response system and the challenges of delivering timely EMS care across a large, rural state. Dr. Garcia joined a multidisciplinary panel exploring the need for a statewide prehospital blood program, and Liana presented the NMCHILES Project, an innovative effort to connect crash, EMS, hospital, trauma, and outcome data to better understand the full picture of injury and patient care.

The Summit brought EMS together with transportation, highway safety, law enforcement, trauma, healthcare, and other partners around one shared goal: improving post-crash care and saving lives.
