Preparedness truly is a two-way street.

Emergency managers work diligently to help people understand their risks, make plans, and know what to do when something happens. Then, the public plays an equally important role by staying informed, taking action, and helping others around them also prepare.

The strongest preparedness efforts happen when those two sides are connected. Emergency managers learn from the communities they serve, which in turn helps community members better understand how to prepare for the risks they face.

We’re glad to have the American Institute of Architects (AIA) joining us in recognizing National Emergency Management Awareness Month.

AIA and IAEM have announced a new partnership to strengthen collaboration on resilience, emergency preparedness, and disaster response. The announcement also highlights the important role architects play in helping communities prepare for and recover from disasters.

What makes someone a great emergency manager?

It may sound like a simple question, but the countless answers we received pointed to many different qualities, like adaptability, trust, open-mindedness, tenacity, compassion, and the ability to make things happen when there isn't a clear path forward.

Put all of these answers together, and you build a pretty good picture of the essential qualities of an emergency manager. Plans need to be written, decisions need to be made, and problems need to be solved, but there are also people to listen to, relationships to build, and moments when you have to take a breath, adjust, and keep going.
