Aging with Dignity

Aging with Dignity Five Wishes takes the guessing out of caring. It is a legal document that guides you through planning before a health crisis.

For nearly 30 years Aging with Dignity has defended the God-given right of the elderly, disabled, and mentally ill to have their human dignity respected and safeguarded, particularly in times of serious illness. With offices in Washington and Tallahassee, the nationally-acclaimed non-profit has touched the lives of tens of millions of Americans and influenced public policy at both the state and na

tional level. Its Five Wishes publication is America’s most popular advance care planning tool that has helped countless families get the kind of end-of-life care they desire. This legal document is available in 29 languages and is distributed by thousands of organizations throughout the country, from large hospitals to tiny churches. More people have used Five Wishes for their living will or advance directive than any other document. Five Wishes empowers you to voice your individual care wishes and bring them to the forefront of the discussion. It gives you and your loved ones the peace of mind that your wishes have been documented and can be honored. For families, it makes wishes known in writing to help end the guessing and provide comfort and assurance. Though we don’t like to think about it, a change in health or an accident can happen to any of us. That’s why it’s important for all of us, regardless of age or health, to have a plan that documents our health care wishes in case we become unable to make important treatment decisions, or communicate about choices. As America’s most frequently used living will, Five Wishes is presented in easy to understand language to help you express your wishes in areas that matter most — the personal, emotional and spiritual as well as the medical and legal. Five Wishes provides a means to legally document a health care surrogate, choices for medical treatment, comfort, and care wishes, as well as what you want your loved ones to know. Kay Kolvin-Gutherie is one of the nation's earliest licensed marriage and family therapists, holding a doctorate in her field and bringing over 40 years of compassionate experience helping people navigate some of life's most painful moments. She specializes in grief counseling for those who have lost loved ones, whether after a long illness or the often more devastating experience of sudden loss. Drawing on Elisabeth Kübler-Ross's five stages of grief, Kay understands that healing is never linear: stages crisscross, timelines vary, and effective therapy means meeting each person exactly where they are, not where we expect them to be. She notes that young people tend to stay in denial longer, while men often remain in the anger stage unless given space to fully express their hurt and disappointment — breakthroughs that only come through being truly heard. Her philosophy is disarmingly simple and profound: "I give them my heart". Her ultimate goal is to guide clients toward not needing her anymore, empowering them to become their own best friend through healthy and healing conversation. Aging with Dignity proudly honors Kay Kolvin-Guthrie for her decades of devoted, expert care and her beautiful reminder that our tears are not a sign of weakness, but they honor the lives of those we love.

Bob Hughes has MS. He's been paralyzed from the neck down for the past two years. From the outside, he and his wife, Susan, should be unhappy, ungrateful. Yet, Bob tells everyone he knows "I am so blessed." How can a man who has had MS for 38 years be so joyful? How could a wife working so hard as a caregiver be so at peace?

Today, May 27th is National Senior Health and Fitness Day, so if you haven't included movement in your day yet, find a time to do so. Movement can look like a five minute walk around the block or simply standing up from your desk, chair, couch, etc. a couple of minutes every hour. Movement does not have to be running a marathon or working out six days a week.
