There is plenty of evidence to suggest that gifted individuals have different metabolic processes and sensory processing systems than individuals of average intelligence. Due to the lack of solid research and the absence of training and education regarding gift

edness in the medical and psychological fields, these individuals often needlessly suffer. This is not unlike how the medical field incorrectly assumed that women’s bodies responded in the same way as men’s bodies to medication. Research is necessary to understand giftedness on a physiological and psychological level, so that the differences in gifted individuals can be discussed without accusations of elitism. Gifted is NOT “better than”, it is simply different. Similar to how research on AIDS and cancer brought about change not only in how these diseases were treated medically, but in how individuals suffering from them were viewed by society, research into how gifted bodies are different will allow for better medical and psychological treatment, as well as increased social understanding and acceptance. Gifted Research and Outreach is a non-profit 501.c.3 corporation, whose mission is to promote a comprehensive and accurate understanding of giftedness through research and outreach.
