💜 Purple Up! Day – April 15 💜

Join the VFW Auxiliary to Post 1924 as we proudly recognize Purple Up! Day, part of the Month of the Military Child. On this special day, we honor the strength, resilience, and sacrifices of our military children—our nation’s youngest heroes.

Military kids serve too. They face frequent moves, long separations from loved ones, and unique challenges with courage and grace. Like a dandelion, military children can thrive wherever they land! Wearing purple symbolizes all branches of the military, united together in support of these incredible young individuals.

We invite our community to wear purple on April 15 to show appreciation and support for military children everywhere. Let’s stand together and remind them that they are seen, valued, and never alone.

đź’ś Thank you, military children, for your service and sacrifice. đź’ś

January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month.

Did you know that the VFW Auxiliary offers cancer grants to members who are battling cancer?

Eligibility requirements:
• Applicant must be a member of the VFW Auxiliary for one (1) full year.
• Current dues must be paid before applying for a cancer grant.
• After twelve (12) months have passed from date of diagnosis or last treatment, application will not be accepted.
• A member is allowed two (2) grants during lifetime. Twelve (12) months must elapse between new diagnosis and/or treatment from date of first grant for a second application to be considered. Continuous treatment which lasts beyond the twelve (12) month period will qualify for a second grant.
• Application will be rejected if member has been deceased for longer than 30 days.

The grant amount is currently $550.00 and funds are paid directly to the member or, in the case of a deceased member, to their estate. Funds are dispersed 2-4 weeks following the acceptance and approval of the completed and signed application. Please read the instructions carefully before submitting an application. The most common reason an application is denied is due to missing information from either the member or physician.

To access the application, log into your MALTA account.

🎄Holiday Surprise at Camp Pendleton! 🎄

Just before Christmas our Fallbrook VFW Auxiliary to Post 1924 spread extra cheer this season by surprising Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton commissary shoppers with cash gifts for the holidays.

Smiles, gratitude, and a few happy tears filled the aisles as military families received an unexpected boost during this special time of year. Thank you to our incredible auxiliary and volunteers for turning compassion into action—and for reminding our service members and their families that their community stands with them. 🇺🇸✨

🎄Holiday Cheer in Action🎄

This week, our VFW Auxiliary was proud to surprise junior Marines stationed at Camp Pendleton with cash donations to help with seasonal expenses.

These incredible Marines have been volunteering all week at the Charles E. Swisher VFW Post 1924, generously giving their time and energy to help renovate and upgrade the post. Being able to give back to them —especially during the holiday season—was truly meaningful.

We are deeply grateful for their service to our country and to our local community. Moments like this remind us of the power of service, gratitude, and coming together to support one another.🇺🇸

Remembrance Day 2025

Remembrance Day, also known as Armistice Day or Poppy Day, is technically meant to honor the end of World War I, which occurred at 11 am on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. But Remembrance Day has long been a time to pay respect to the fallen from all wars.

Traditions used to observe Remembrance Day include the wearing of poppies, and a two-minute silence at 11 AM on the eleventh day of the eleventh month. Although Veterans Day is observed in the U.S. on Nov. 11, Remembrance Day functions elsewhere in the world more closely related to Memorial Day in May.

Remembrance Day will on be on Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2025.

When Did The First Moment of Silence Occur?
It is said that the first moment of silence associated with Remembrance Day was a tradition adopted by British military members stationed in South Africa in 1918. There was one minute of silence to honor the fallen, and one to honor those who had returned.

This tradition was relayed back to Britain, and one year after the end of World War I, King George V held a similar two-minute silence. He intended it as a public moment so “the thoughts of everyone may be concentrated on reverent remembrance of the glorious dead” according to an article published on the BBC official site.

Are There Two Remembrance Days?
Remembrance Day is honored in many countries around the world, but in some areas (including Britain and other “Commonwealth countries”) there is also “Remembrance Sunday” held each year on the Sunday nearest to Nov. 11.

Remembrance Day in Canada
Remembrance Day in Canada is celebrated in the following ways:

Remembrance Day is recognized as national holiday
Leading up to Remembrance Day many people wear artificial poppies
Special church services are held which often include the playing of “The Last Post” or the fourth verse of the “Ode of Remembrance”
Two minutes of silence is held at 11:00 a.m. during most services and ceremonies
Wreaths are laid at local war memorials
National War Memorials have official ceremonies
Many people lay poppies, letters and photographs on the tomb
It varies by province in how the holiday is observed
Why Are Poppies Worn On Remembrance Day?
The poppy grew into a symbol of the fallen thanks to the poetry of a Canadian military physician, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae. He wrote In Flanders Fields, which includes the following:

“In Flanders fields the poppies grow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.”

According to the British Legion official site, “Bright red Flanders poppies (Papaver rhoeas) however, were delicate but resilient flowers and grew in their thousands, flourishing even in the middle of chaos and destruction.”

These flowers definitely left an impression on Lt. Col. McCrae, and his poetry inspired an American named Moina Michael, “to make and sell red silk poppies which were brought to England by a French woman, Anna Guérin.”

The British Legion reports that in present times, the use of the poppy doesn’t just honor the fallen, but in some cases it also employs many disabled service members. “Over 5 million Scottish poppies (which have four petals and no leaf unlike poppies in the rest of the UK) are still made by hand by disabled ex-Servicemen at Lady Haig’s Poppy Factory each year”.

Today, the American Legion and many other organizations also use the poppy in fundraising and awareness efforts associated with Remembrance Day.

Today is Veterans Day!

Celebrated annually on November 11, Veterans Day differs from Memorial Day in that it is set aside to honor all those who have served, whether in wartime or peacetime, with a focus on living veterans (as opposed to in remembrance of those who’ve passed). As many members know, Veterans Day was not always known by this name. It was originally Armistice Day, the day we celebrated the end of World War I: November 11, 1918. In 1954, nearly a decade after World War II ended and a year after the Korean War ceasefire, President Eisenhower signed a bill to change the name to Veterans Day in honor of American veterans of all wars/conflicts. The date was moved around a few times in the decades to follow, but in 1979, President Gerald Ford signed a law returning the celebration to its original date, Armistice Day, under the name Veterans Day.

How is your Auxiliary celebrating our brave service members this Veterans Day? Let us know in the comments! And if you have pictures, please email them to us at [email protected] – we would love to feature your Auxiliary and celebrate your veterans throughout this November.
