U of MN Lion Center The Lion Center at the University of Minnesota is announcing its new mission to initiate novel approaches to lion conservation.

For decades, Craig Packer and his research team have conducted comprehensive long-term research on lion behavior and human-lion interaction for the famous Serengeti Lion Project. Their findings have shaped the way we understand lions and their role in complex savannah ecosystems and identified new approaches for protecting these dangerous predators. The United States recently designated African li

ons as an endangered species highlighting the growing threats to this iconic cat. Retaliatory killings by local communities, habitat loss, poaching and trophy hunting all contribute to the precipitous decline of lion populations in under-funded African reserves. Without changes to policy and a fresh approach to conservation, the outlook is bleak. The Lion Center at the University of Minnesota is announcing its new mission to tackle the complicated issues around lion conservation through advocacy for direct international funding for African wildlife reserves and development of innovative strategies to protect both lions and vulnerable human communities in an ever-evolving landscape.

Dr. Meredith Palmer, a researcher at the Lion Center, and our friends at the Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve have published an interesting article evaluating whether wolf predation of deer causes behaviorally-mediated trophic cascades in our neck of the woods. Check out Meredith's blog for a fun explanation of how the experiments were conducted and a link to a free version of the peer-reviewed publication.

The COVID-19 pandemic is wreaking havoc on conservation efforts in Africa. The perfect storm of reduced funding, lower conservation capacity, and heightened threats to wildlife and ecosystems could destroy the conservation gains achieved over the past several decades.

Many of the protected areas where we work are facing budget reductions of 75-85%, which means layoffs of existing personnel and the possibility of these nature reserves being stripped of wildlife due to poaching and/or converted to agricultural lands.

We must come together as an international community to find ways to bolster conservation efforts if we want future generations to have access to the incredible wildlife of Africa.

In Africa, COVID-19 has created a perfect storm of reduced funding, restrictions on the operations of conservation agencies, and elevated human threats to nature. This Perspective discusses solutions to move beyond this immediate crisis.

These shaggy beauties are waterbuck antelope. As their name suggests, they are highly water-dependent and will not be found far from it.

They often evade lions and leopards by running into the water because the big cats do not like to get wet, even if it means missing a meal.

The white ring on their rumps serves as a 'follow me' sign for the herd when they are running away from predators.

Waterbuck are the most plentiful animal in Gorongosa National Park, Mozambique, the site of a Snapshot Safari camera grid.

Head over to www.snapshotsafari.org tomorrow morning to check out the latest images from this gorgeous nature reserve!
