🦁 Shepherding Hope Around the World 🌎

At our September 30 meeting, Lion Chaera Bartel provided our program and shared about her work as Director of Shepherd 23:1, an Oklahoma-based nonprofit with a mission of taking the Gospel of Christ to places where He is not yet known.

Chaera explained Shepherd 23:1’s holistic approach to missions through training and mentoring pastors, planting churches, and caring for vulnerable children. In 2026 alone, the organization has trained more than 300 pastors and provides ongoing mentorship to more than 550 pastors.

She also shared about Shepherd 23:1’s work with children in India and Uganda. The organization currently provides full-time care for 111 orphaned children, while its mission center in Uganda serves an additional 45–65 homeless boys each day with meals, bathing, care, and discipleship.

It was an eye-opening look at both the tremendous needs around the world and the work being done to meet them.

🦁 Lions Learn What’s New at Fairview Regional Medical Center

The Fairview Lions Club recently welcomed Emily Eitzen, CEO of Fairview Regional Medical Center, for an update on what’s happening at our local hospital and the ways FRMC continues to serve our community.

Emily shared information about several upcoming community health opportunities, including drive-thru flu shot clinics on October 5 from 1:30–5:30 p.m. and October 21 from 11 a.m.–3 p.m. Flu shots are $25 for those without insurance. FRMC will also be at the Senior Center on October 2.

A highlight of the program was hearing about four Rural Health Transformation Program (RHTP) grants received by FRMC. One of those grants supports the hospital’s Community Health Worker, Kaylea Drapalla, LCSW.

In that role, Kaylea helps connect patients with resources for health-related social needs, assists with SoonerCare enrollment, provides follow-up support after discharge, coordinates care, supports prevention efforts, and helps strengthen connections between healthcare providers and community organizations.

We appreciate Emily taking the time to join us and share how Fairview Regional Medical Center continues working to meet the healthcare needs of Fairview and the surrounding area.

🦁 September 9 - A Conversation That Matters

This week, the Fairview Lions Club welcomed Kaylea Drapalla, LCSW, with Fairview Regional Medical Center for a timely program on su***de awareness and prevention.

With September being Su***de Prevention Month and September 10 recognized as World Su***de Prevention Day, Kaylea discussed warning signs such as hopelessness and feeling like a burden to others, as well as the importance of recognizing when someone may be struggling and taking those concerns seriously.

Kaylea emphasized the importance of supportive relationships, community connections, and active listening. Simply being present, listening, and helping someone connect with the right resources can make a difference. She also discussed reducing access to fi****ms, medications, and other potentially lethal means during a crisis.

Kaylea shared information about the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline, which is available by calling or texting 988 for anyone experiencing a mental health crisis or concerned about someone who may be struggling.

Kaylea provides counseling services at Fairview Regional Medical Center and is also trained in EMDR, a therapy approach often used to help individuals dealing with trauma.

August 12 - Staying Safe in a Digital World 🔐

Last week, Lion Daniel Sproul had the program and brought Phillip Sproul, Vulnerability Manager at Credence Management Solutions, to speak with us about cybersecurity and how quickly online scams and threats are changing.

Phillip explained that attackers aren’t just after financial information. Medical records, email credentials and even access to our computers can have value. And with AI now helping scammers create convincing emails, texts and even clone voices from public recordings, some of the old warning signs aren’t as easy to spot anymore.

He shared several practical ways to protect ourselves — use long, unique passwords or passphrases, enable multi-factor authentication, keep devices updated and be cautious with unexpected emails, phone calls and QR codes.

Phillip also introduced the “SLAM” method for suspicious emails: check the Sender, Links, Attachments and Message before taking action.

Perhaps the simplest takeaway of the day: slow down and verify. Whether it’s an urgent email, a call supposedly from your bank or even a familiar voice asking for money, take the extra step to make sure it’s legitimate.

August 5 | Taking Heart Health Seriously ❤️

This week, Robyn Acre, RN, Cardiopulmonary Rehab Manager at Fairview Regional Medical Center, joined us to talk about heart health and the importance of knowing our risk factors.

Robyn shared some eye-opening statistics, including that heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States, accounting for about 1 in every 5 deaths. She also walked us through the warning signs of a heart attack and stressed the importance of seeking help immediately when those symptoms occur.

A big part of her presentation focused on the things we can do to lower our risk. Staying active, maintaining a healthy weight, managing blood pressure and cholesterol, avoiding to***co, reducing stress, and getting adequate sleep can all make a difference.
