Remembering Jileen Carter: A Life of Passion for Jesus

FCO Community- As I have prayed and reflected on Jill’s life and the gift God gave us through her, one word keeps coming to my heart and mind: "PASSION." Passion is a deep love, strong conviction, and willingness to give of ourselves for something or Someone we believe in. Jill lived that way. I’d like to remember her through three expressions of her passion.

Passion for Jesus- Jill’s first love was Jesus Christ. She was a woman who continually said “Yes” to God. I believe Jill would encourage each of us to say our own “Yes” to Jesus by receiving His forgiveness, following Him, and, if we have drifted, recommitting our lives to Him. Her faith was what motivated her to serve, and I believe she would be deeply grateful if someone surrendered their life to Jesus during this season of grief. Jill also showed us what it looks like to take small steps of obedience and trust God, even when we don’t understand His ways. She would make room for our tears and our grief, but she would also point us toward the hope we have in Jesus.

Passion for Family- Jill poured herself into her family with love and servant leadership. She faithfully loved and supported her husband, Rob, and their children, Payton, Jaxon, and Lawson. She also cared deeply for her parents, Dick and Cathleen, her siblings, and so many others in her extended family.

Passion for Youth- I’ve known Jill since she was a young teenager through youth ministry events in the Rochester area. I watched her start budding into ministry at Wildwood Christian camp as a young girl looking for ways to help with a talent show and praying for friends. Even then, she was looking for ways to serve, encourage others, and help young people know Jesus. Jill experienced Flower City Work Camp as a teen and wanted other young people to follow in her footsteps. As a young adult she served as a FCWC church rep, program team leader, worship leader and student ministry coordinator. For the past five years, Jill served as our FCWC Director. She became a spiritual “mom” to so many young people and volunteers. Many of us picture her behind a table at “Home Base,” faithfully handling logistics while pouring out love, encouragement, and prayer. Jill had an extraordinary capacity to serve and did it generously.

A Final Conversation- I spoke with Jill at length during our weekly conference call last Thursday, the day before her last day here on earth. We encouraged one another to stand strong in adversity and talked about whether God might be preparing us for an even greater harvest of changed lives through FCWC 2027. Jill embraced the FCO mission of "mobilizing the Church into service that the city might see Jesus." So I believe one way we can honor Jill is to continue what she cared so deeply about. Please join us in praying and serving so that God might bring a mighty movement of changed lives before, during, and after the upcoming camp.

Give Me Jesus- At one of our FCWC Leadership Team meetings, Jill played a song during our opening devotional called “Give Me Jesus.” It is a song her mother loves, and Jill loved it too. I think Jill would want us to hear its message today that when everything else is stripped away, give me Jesus. “And when I come to die, give me Jesus.” https://youtu.be/9rZ8k9m2hwo

Words of Hope- In our grief, may we hold tightly to these promises from God’s Word:

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort.” (2 Corinthians 1:3–4)

“We do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope.” (1 Thessalonians 4:13)

“For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.” (Philippians 1:21)

“Be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.” (1 Corinthians 15:58)

I love Jill as a dear sister and co-worker in the Lord. Jill lived with passion. She loved Jesus passionately, loved her family deeply, and poured herself into young people generously. May we honor her by carrying that passion forward!

May God grant His grace, peace, and comfort to Rob, the children, the family, and all of us who love Jill.

FCWC Family, it is with deeply saddened hearts that we let you know that our Director of Camp, Jileen Carter, passed into the loving arms of her Savior last Friday. Jill has served as our Director since 2022 but has been a part of the FCWC family for many years prior, as a camper, church rep, program team leader, worship leader, and so much more.

Jill’s infectious laugh and love has permeated Camp and helped shape the culture over her many years of service. No matter how busy she may have been, she would always take the time to check in, encourage and pray with a returning leader or overwhelmed camper at any moment of the day. We were so blessed to have her as a part of our team and know that her influence and legacy as a faithful servant of Jesus will not soon be forgotten.

I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid. - John 14:27

Storage need for Flower City Work Camp
The space will be used to store donated heavy appliances, cabinetry, and other building materials that we use in our ministry to renovate and repair homes in Rochester’s inner city.
We are looking for a storage location with the following characteristics:
First-floor access, with reasonably close access for loading and unloading.
A fairly central Rochester location, although we are flexible.
Approximately one or two garage-sized spaces, or similar.
A secure area with key or code access for our worksite coordinators.
Climate control is not necessary.
Ideally free or very low-cost.
If you know of a business, church, nonprofit, city organization, property owner, or anyone else who might have an appropriate space available, we would be extremely grateful for an introduction or referral. Please contact [email protected]
