Today, we congratulate our brothers Lieutenant Steve Ash and Captain Bob Sliger. Captain Sliger finished his final shift on Friday after 26 years of service to the citizens of Fairmont. Lieutenant Ash is working his final shift today and will leave with 27 years of service. Both Captain Sliger and Lieutenant Ash served on the local 318 executive board during their careers. Captain Sliger served as President for multiple terms and Lieutenant Ash served as Vice President for multiple terms. Local 318 would like to thank them for their hard work and dedication to their Union Brothers through years of collective bargaining and for their commitment to protecting the citizens of Fairmont. We wish you both all the best in your retirement.

Congratulations to our 2026 Fairmont Firefighters Scholarship recipients!
Fairmont Senior: Sophie Starn who will be attending Fairmont State University for exercise physiology;

East Fairmont’s Blake Ringer who will attend Fairmont State with a major in business management, and

North Marion’s Brady Carpenter who is enrolled at WVU in behavioral neuroscience. We wish all of these students the best in their education!

Today we honor Captain Okey Shaw. Captain Shaw gave his life in the line of duty for the citizens of the City of Fairmont at the age of 33 years old on July 4th 1925. Shaw was killed when a wall collapsed upon him while fighting fire at the Home Laundry Company on Fairmont Eastside. Shaw is memorialized with a plaque at the base of the flagpole at the former Eastside station in which he served as well as at the new Eastside Station in a memorial in front of the entrance.
