Military Spouse Appreciation Day is celebrated annually on the Friday before Mother’s Day. In 2026, it is observed on Friday, May 8. Established in 1984, this day honors the contributions, sacrifices, and unwavering support of military spouses to their families, service members, and the nation.

🇺🇸 From a Veteran — To Every Military Spouse
I wore the uniform—but I never carried it alone.
Behind every deployment, every mission, every long stretch of silence… there was you.
You didn’t sign the contract. You didn’t raise your right hand. But you still served—every single day.
You served in the quiet moments no one sees.In the empty spaces at the dinner table. In the nights where sleep didn’t come easy, and worry came too often.
You held down a life that didn’t pause just because we were gone. You became the steady one, the strong one, the everything-all-at-once one—even when you were overwhelmed, exhausted, or scared.
While we focused on the mission, you were carrying the real weight of life—the kids, the bills, the unknowns, the emergencies, the things we didn’t even realize were happening.
And the truth is… there are moments we missed.Time we can’t get back.Days you had to walk through alone. That stays with us.
To those who came before—you built the strength and resilience this life stands on.
To those living it right now—even if no one says it enough, what you’re doing matters more than you know.
And to those who will step into this life—it will test you, stretch you, and change you…but it will also reveal a strength in you that can’t be broken.
From someone who’s been on the other side of it—
We see you.Even when we didn’t say it enough… we see you now.
We know what you carried. We know what you gave up.And we know we couldn’t have done any of it without you.
No rank.No medal. No ceremony could ever fully honor what you’ve done.
But it mattered. It still matters. And it always will.

A Tribute to 1SG Jack R. Harris

Today, we honor the life and legacy of 1SG Jack R. Harris — a man whose 23 years of service in both the United States Air Force and the Army National Guard were not simply a duty, but a reflection of his deep and unwavering love for this country.

1SG Harris was the kind of patriot you don’t just hear about — he was the kind you felt. He carried his devotion not only in uniform, but in the way he lived, the way he raised his family, and the way he gave back to others. As the founder of the American Freedom Defenders Memorial, he took an idea born from respect, remembrance, and community and turned it into a lasting reality. He and his wife generously donated their small portion of land in Fairmont, Nebraska, off of Highway 6, so this memorial could be built — a place of sanctuary for veterans, their families, and friends. He also envisioned it as a learning memorial for generations to come, where history, sacrifice, and service could be understood and carried forward. A place where names are not forgotten, where plaques and tiles stand as lasting reminders of sacrifice, service, and honor. He didn’t do it for glory or recognition, but so that all veterans would be remembered. Because of him, countless stories will continue to be told.
Service ran deep in his blood. His father, whom he spoke of with immense pride, fought in World War II. His wife’s brother served in Korea. His own uncle gave the ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam. And 1SG Harris carried that legacy forward — not just through his own service, but through his sons.
Four of his five boys stood beside him in the Army National Guard, following in their father’s footsteps. His fourth son carried that legacy into a combat tour in Iraq, continuing that line of courage and sacrifice.

In his home, 1SG Harris created a space he called “the war room” — not just a room, but a symbol of remembrance, reflection, and respect for those who served.

He was a strong man — firm, disciplined, and at times hard on his boys — but always fair. He shaped them with purpose, instilling values that cannot be taught lightly: honor, duty, respect, and love of country.

1SG Jack R. Harris was more than a soldier. He was a father, a leader, a builder of legacy, and a guardian of memory. He believed in something bigger than himself, and he lived that belief every day.

Let us never forget this true veteran — not just for the years he served, but for the lives he impacted, the family he raised, and the sanctuary he created.

His legacy stands strong. His name endures.
And his spirit will never fade.

1SG Jack R. Harris — we honor you, we thank you, and we will remember.

Gary L. Peace put in over 40 years serving this country, including time with the Central Intelligence Agency, and then turned around and gave countless hours helping us build the American Freedom Defenders Veterans Memorial.

He didn’t do it for recognition—he just showed up and did the work.

We were lucky to have him be part of this, and you can see his legacy in that memorial today.

He’s not forgotten. Not by a long shot.

Two and a half centuries of service tell a story written not just in history books, but in the lives of those who stood the line. It’s a story of brothers and sisters in arms, of sacrifices made far from home, and of a promise to protect something greater than ourselves. As we mark 250 years, we honor those who came before, stand beside those still serving, and remember that freedom has always come at a cost—paid willingly by the brave.

Remember your loved ones—stand with your brothers and sisters in arms on the wall by purchasing a tile with your loved one’s name who served:
