AmeriCorps Service Project to benefit JJ Bags

AmeriCorps Service Project to benefit JJ Bags This will be an ongoing project to support JJ Bags, an organization that provides duffle bags filled

For the next year, I will be serving with AmeriCorps through the Preservation Alliance of West Virginia. As part of my service year I have decided to partner with JJ Bags to provide handmade blankets and other care items to support their mission of providing bags to foster care children in the state.

I need to give a special shout-out to fellow AmeriCorps member Emma Durham and her group of volunteers who helped me sew and finish dozens of blankets this year. I could not have gotten these done without this group of wonderful ladies.

Thank you to fellow AmeriCorps member Marisa Terwilliger for organizing a supply drive and recruiting volunteers to sew blankets in Philippi, WV.

Thank you also to Eli Thompson and his gaming partner Richard for hosting several charity streams to collect supplies. The gaming community donated many of the supply donations over the two years of the project, including donations from viewers in Europe.

September 2020-August 2021 more than 20 volunteers donated 265 blocks, 81 blankets, and we finished 9 blankets out of squares.
August 2021-August 2022 57 volunteers donated 820 blocks, sent in 99 blankets, and helped put together 61 blankets out of donated squares! I received donations from 25 states this year!!! [combined with donations from the 2020-2021 term, volunteers sent items from 29 different states]]
That is a total of 1085 squares and 250 completed blankets (plus donations of hats, hearts, and stuffed animals)!

When I started this project in fall 2020 I thought that I might be able to make or collect a few blankets and maybe do a supply drive for JJ Bags. I never would have fathomed that less than two years later this project would grow to donating 250 handmade blankets sent in from volunteers all over the country, plus several thousand dollars in supply donations to benefit foster kids in West Virginia.
Thank you all so very much for all your support, donations, and kind words. You all made this project a success and I am grateful to have met so many wonderful people doing this work.
