“I’ve been silent for too long!
“I see the world is rotten because of silence.” — St. Catherine of Siena.
Filmmaking is about uplifting many voices and stories.
When a local casting agency asked me to promote the latest Universal Studios film production in the area they did not want the casting listing to include information that they would not offer medical or religious exemptions for extras in regard to the vaccines in a public post. Even though they would be testing for covid. I was told that they would not allow for religious or medical exemptions. Another colleague of mine has said that he was coerced into getting the vaccine for work. It would have resulted in a loss of 70% of his filmmaking gigs.
Exemptions should not just be for film industry workers who are above the line or for talent/actors. I see so many times at prestigious filmmaking events that those who work behind the scenes are required to wear masks and have strict requirements. While presenters and actors are not required. Inclusive filmmaking should take into account religious and medical exemptions. Storytellers come from all backgrounds. I have felt since my conversion back to the Catholic faith in 2020 that there was no room for my voice in the film industry and have been mostly silent on hiatus and reflecting.
