Have you ever driven over the Main Street overpass near I-195 and noticed the American flag flying high alongside the flags of our military branches? That spot is the Charles F. Albaugh Memorial Flagpole, dedicated in May 2004 to honor a beloved local veteran.
The Story Behind "The Flag Guy": Following the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, U.S. veteran Charles F. Albaugh—affectionately known around town as "The Flag Guy"—took it upon himself to lift our community’s spirits. He personally tended to and displayed a massive multitude of American flags along the I-195 overpass to show national unity, boost morale, and remind everyone of the strength in togetherness.
What the Memorial Stands For Today:🇺🇸
Patriotism & Community Spirit: It honors the deep love of country and community that Albaugh embodied every single day.🎖️ Honoring All Military Branches: With the primary U.S. flagpole surrounded by flags representing each branch of the military, it pays tribute to all who have served.
A Gathering Place for Remembrance: Today, the site serves as a vital symbolic landmark for local veterans and community organizations—like the Fairhaven Lions Club—to hold tribute ceremonies, conduct flag retirement burnings, and raise flags in memory of local fallen service members.
The next time you drive past the Main Street overpass, take a moment to look up, remember "The Flag Guy," and honor all those who have served! ❤️💙
