Southeast Iowa Food Hub

Southeast Iowa Food Hub Our Vision/Mission: To develop a healthy local food system in Jefferson and surrounding counties. We have a volunteer grant writer.

Southeast Iowa Food Hub Case Statement

The Need: SE Iowa Food Hub began in the fall of 2014 as a project of the Sustainable Living Coalition (SLC), a 501(c)3 non-profit, to develop an organic local food system in Jefferson and surrounding counties to serve present and future generations. Protecting soil, air, and water quality, and cultivating a sustainable organic food network, are essential fo

r a healthy future. To achieve this, local farmers (the producers) must be brought together with consumers of healthy food throughout Southeast Iowa. 50% or more of Food Hub activity will be educational outreach—educating and networking with the consumer community and farmers to resolve the existing problems surrounding conventional and GMO agriculture practices and consumption of unhealthy foods. Farmers need to be educated on the advantages of converting acreage to organic sustainable farmland while increasing organic food production and improving overall agriculture practices. The Urgency: For a sustainable, healthy life, we must protect ourselves and our fragile ecosystem from further destruction. This can be achieved locally through implementing more organic/sustainable practices in Jefferson County. The easiest place to start is to provide local organic food to MIU, local restaurants and grocers. The local customer and farmer response to our initiative so far has been overwhelmingly enthusiastic. More than 10 growers in vegetable production are considering transitioning to more organic practices, providing they can receive the appropriate education and market value for their produce. Two local conventional row crop farmers, holding just under 1000 acres are already in conversation with us to consider transitioning to organic practices. Our Qualifications: The 10-year-old SLC up to now has been involved mainly in sustainability education. The SE Iowa Food Hub Director has 12 years of experience in the production and marketing of organic produce in this region, with over 35 established account relationships, including Whole Foods Market, Hy-Vee Stores, and other large Midwest grocery chains. Our Board has 16 members (8 active in the Food Hub) that are comprised of community educators, business leaders/owners, and professionals in the areas of organic agriculture, sustainability education, GMO testing, health supplement/eco products, green building, and socially responsible investment strategies. We are a devoted, powerful, and respected team. Benefits from our Actions: The short term direct benefit of Hub activities (season one) is to provide fresh local organic food for MIU, local restaurants, grocery stores, and Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) seasonal shares, while supporting local organic growers. A major long term benefit is the expansion of organic agriculture in our county and surrounding counties, with the attendant protection of soil, air, and water quality, and helping save our honey bees from the adverse effects of pesticides. Additionally, the Hub will contribute significantly to creating food security and food sovereignty. The most effective way to handle global warming and adverse weather conditions is to sequester carbon in the soil. This is achieved through organic agriculture practices. Consequences if the SE Iowa Food Hub Fails: Continued deterioration of our personal health as well as health of the air, water, soil, and wildlife that support our local food system are predictable consequences. If SE Iowa Food Hub is not supported, it could be years before another such effort can be mounted in this area.

Our Traction Thursdays guest entrepreneur this week is Kim Strubell, founder of Charity Seeds.
Kim is a consummate social entrepreneur, innovating a simple and effective way to help schools, orphanages, and communities achieve food security.
https://charityseeds.org/
"We found a practical way of bringing food security to everyone. It is through sustainable small-scale organic farming based on biointensive farming methods. Charity is achievable. Food security is necessary."
"The word charity comes from the Latin caritas, which means love. For us, charity is love in motion. It’s sometimes easy, more often inconvenient, but always necessary. It’s the ability to use one’s territory of influence, relative resources and power to affect lives for the better."
There are many lessons from Kim's work around the world that we can apply in our community, including the nutritional and social benefits of growing far more of our own food on home and community gardens.
