Every Friday morning in July, families walk through the doors of the Mary Pickford Theater for the Cathedral City’s Summer Movie Series. Local council members attend personally and help serve refreshments, like popcorn and water, to the kids, while parents greet one another and catch up before the show begins.

The Free Kids Summer Movie Series is just one of the many accessible community programming events, classes, and services that Cathedral City puts on throughout the year. This commitment to community is reflected not only in Cathedral City’s public programming, but also in its broader approach to housing, neighborhood development and quality of life. Under the leadership of Mayor Raymond Gregory and the Cathedral City Council, these programs reflect a deliberate effort to make residents feel connected, supported and involved in the city’s future.

CHOC CSO Joy Silver’s recent Multi-Housing News piece explored European
models and how they could provide valuable insights for California and the U.S. i.e. how these models might inspire new approaches to meet domestic needs.

In a recent CHOC piece, we expanded Joy’s discussion by reintegrating original pieces from Monocle and The New York Times, showcasing a beautiful resident experience, with suggested, actionable paths voiced by Joy. Note: internal discussions were inspired by these articles, which examine affordable housing in Switzerland and Austria.

With a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in social work from California State University Sacramento, she combines her academic foundation with superior communication and coaching skills to foster collaboration and inspire change. Since joining CHOC in June 1999, she has managed various programs and initiatives, including youth and family initiatives and resident services programs.

CHOC IMPACT met 79% of their goal 🎉🎉🎉
2026 is the CHOC organization’s first Big Day of Giving and we could not be more grateful for these results. All funds raised go directly into resident services for our communities in Sacramento and Yolo counties.
