Calling all Forest Rangers Academy recruits! We still have two spots open in our Forest Rangers Academy day camp coming up on October 12th from 9am-3pm. Your mission: Explore, discover, protect.

This active day academy will focus on the most important aspects of being a junior Forest Ranger – teamwork, environmental stewardship, survival skills, and leadership. We’ll complete outdoor challenges, learn tracking and navigation, and explore Pennsylvania’s amazing woodlands through hands-on adventures.

🤘 Metal Monday 🤘

Turkey vultures walk with death on the daily. Their incredible sense of smell alerts them to carrion and then they feast. Their digestive system is an absolute microbial nightmare. With stomach juices so acidic it registers near zero on the pH scale, turkey vultures’ bellies are able destroy many pathogens they encounter while feeding on the dead. By rapidly consuming infected carcasses, they can remove potential sources of pathogens such as anthrax before those pathogens have more opportunity to multiply and spread.

And that bald head? Not just for show. No feathers means less nasty carrion getting stuck to their faces while they're elbow-deep in dinner. Their bodies are built for destruction. Weak stomachs… move over.

Best of all? Turkey vultures willingly urinate and defecate on their own feet and legs. Oh yeah, a turkey vulture will relieve itself and stare you down in the process without ever blinking an eye. Because it’s not just for funsies. It helps sanitize their body. Turkey vultures live on ick side of life and they don’t give a feather what you think of them.

The next time you see a turkey vulture circling overhead, don’t think “eww”. Turkey vultures do the hard work, the dangerous job too extreme for most wildlife. Respect the crew who clean our streets. Totally metal!
