🖤 Strong Moms. Strong Families. Stronger Communities.

August is National Breastfeeding Month, and August 25–31 is Black Breastfeeding Week, an important opportunity to recognize and address the disparities Black mothers and families continue to experience in maternal and infant health.

The Tri-City NAACP is proud to share this upcoming community event hosted by Solano County Supervisor Wanda Williams, bringing families together with diapers, breastfeeding resources, family support services, community connections, and more.

Access to information, resources, and support can make a real difference for families. We are grateful to see those resources being brought directly into our Fairfield community.

Community Event

This two-part workshop series for seniors is a project of APAPA Solano County Chapter - SOC intern Jack Liu who was placed with the California Human Development (CHD) organization. Jack is working on his Master’s in Public Health and will facilitate these workshops along with Jenalee Dawson Suisun City Council. This event will be held at 188 E. Alaska Ave., Fairfield, CA. Thank you CHD and your amazing staff for mentoring and providing opportunities for our rising leaders!

Today we celebrate Juneteenth.

A day that marks the fulfillment of freedom and reminds us that progress is never automatic. It is built through courage, sacrifice, resilience, and community.

As we honor the generations who fought for freedom, we also recognize the responsibility we carry today: to continue advancing equity, opportunity, and justice for all.

Juneteenth is more than a moment in history. It is a reminder that freedom must be protected, opportunity must be expanded, and every generation has a role in building a better future.

📚 Understanding the Systems That Serve Our Community: POST Part 3

As part of our ongoing effort to better understand the systems that impact our communities, the Tri-City NAACP recently met with representatives connected to POST, the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training.

Many people have never heard of POST, yet it plays an important role in California's law enforcement system.

POST is responsible for establishing minimum training standards for peace officers throughout California. It helps ensure officers receive training, maintain professional standards, and meet certification requirements throughout their careers.

In recent years, POST has also taken on an expanded role through California Senate Bill 2 (SB 2), which was introduced to us during the community learning forum with Chief Marshall in 2021, which created a process for reviewing serious officer misconduct and, in certain circumstances, decertifying officers who are found to have engaged in conduct that meets the criteria established by law.

One of the most important things I learned is that accountability processes often involve multiple agencies, each with different responsibilities and authorities.

Understanding those roles helps communities better navigate the system, ask informed questions, and develop realistic expectations about how accountability processes work.

At the Tri-City NAACP, we believe community education is an important part of community empowerment.

The more we understand the systems that serve our communities, the more effectively we can advocate for accountability, transparency, and positive outcomes.

Because informed communities are empowered communities.

📚 Understanding the Systems That Serve Our Community: The California DOJ Office of CARE Part 2

Last week, the Tri-City NAACP met with the California DOJ's Office of Community Awareness, Response, and Engagement (CARE)

Many people have never heard of the CARE Office, and that's understandable. It is a relatively new office established by California Attorney General Rob Bonta with a mission of helping connect communities to the Department of Justice and strengthening relationships with organizations across the state.

What stood out to me most was that CARE was created to help bridge gaps between government agencies and communities that have historically felt disconnected from those systems.

Rather than focusing solely on enforcement, the CARE Office focuses on education, community engagement, relationship building, information sharing, and connecting community organizations with resources.

They host educational programming, community conversations, and outreach efforts designed to help residents better understand the California Department of Justice and the resources available to them.

One of the themes that resonated with me was the importance of building relationships before a crisis occurs.

Too often, communities only interact with agencies when something has gone wrong. The CARE Office recognizes that trust, communication, and partnership are strongest when relationships are built proactively rather than reactively.

As the Tri-City NAACP continues creating opportunities for community education and learning, I believe the CARE Office can be an important partner in helping connect residents with information, resources, and a better understanding of how state systems operate.

Community empowerment begins with knowledge.

And strong partnerships begin with conversation.
