Fairfield’s first National Night Out is almost here!

Join the Fairfield Police Department on Tuesday, August 4, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Sherman Green and Reef Road for a free, family-friendly evening focused on community, safety, and fun.

The event will include:

- Bike obstacle course
- Bike safety talk
- Free child identification kits
- Face painting
- Balloon animals
- DJ
- Dunk Tank
- Food trucks
- Community organization tables
- Kids activities
- Activity Passport prize drawing
- K9 demonstration
- Flagman Safety demonstration
- Fire Department equipment demonstration

Yale New Haven Health will also be giving away helmets at the bike obstacle course, and Hartford HealthCare will be handing out Car Buddy magnets to help promote child safety.

Touch-a-Truck will include:

- Police vehicles and specialty units
- Fire Department
- EMS
- Animal Control
- DPW
- CERT
- Connecticut State Police Bomb Squad

If safety is truly our community's top priority, then that commitment can't stop at traffic enforcement.

Extreme heat is one of the most dangerous weather events we face. It drives up calls for heat exhaustion, heat stroke, dehydration, cardiac emergencies, and fires—all while making it significantly more dangerous for the firefighters responding.

During extreme heat, departments face:
🔥 Higher emergency call volumes
🔥 Shorter work cycles for firefighters
🔥 Longer rehabilitation periods consistent with NFPA 1584
🔥 More personnel needed to maintain safe emergency operations

The IAFF has made it clear: municipalities should plan ahead by increasing on-duty staffing and ensuring sufficient rehabilitation resources during extreme heat events.

Public safety isn't just about preventing accidents—it's also about ensuring there are enough trained professionals available to respond when emergencies happen.

If we're going to have serious conversations about safety, they need to include the safety of the firefighters and residents who depend on an adequately staffed fire department every day, especially during extreme weather.

Because safety isn't measured by the slogans we use—it's measured by the priorities we fund.

One year ago today, Fairfield lost a First Selectman who understood that leadership wasn't about protecting titles or preserving the status quo—it was about doing what was right.

Bill Ge**er believed that the safety of our firefighters and the residents we serve should never be negotiable. He listened. He asked questions. He challenged the way things had always been done. When he saw an opportunity to make our department stronger and safer, he acted. His vision wasn't just about today—it was about building a better Fairfield for the future.

Many have spoken publicly about committing to Bill's legacy, but a legacy isn't carried forward by repeating words. It's carried forward by actually living the values he stood for. It means putting people before politics, embracing transparency over convenience, and having the courage to make decisions that improve safety based on the facts—not on what someone believes is most politically expedient.

Those of us who knew Bill don't need reminders of what he stood for, as we were fortunate enough to see it firsthand. This also means we can recognize when that vision becomes blurred.

So today, we remember Bill with gratitude and renew our commitment to build on the foundation he laid. We will continue advocating for civilian safety, safer working conditions, stronger support for firefighters, and a town government that earns the public's trust through action—not just promises. We will continue that work regardless of the obstacles or resistance, and regardless of who would prefer those difficult conversations simply go away.

The best tribute we can offer Bill Ge**er isn't a memorial. It's refusing to let the work he started end with him.

We miss you and your leadership, Bill. Thank you for showing us what public service is supposed to look like.
