The rain started with loud thunderstorms yesterday afternoon and went through the night. There is rain forecast every day until next Thursday. We need it desperately, but all at once makes a muddy mess for everyone except the pigs. Clementine, Winston and Harold love digging into fresh mud to create their wallows. The strength they possess in their noses to dig deep into the wet clay always surprises me. A muddy pig is a happy pig. One look at Clementine’s face tells you everything about how much she’s loving life. 🐷

Phoenix decided that he wanted to change his diet options today. He came up to the house and treated himself to some yummy oak leaves. He got serious about reaching the upper branches and climbed up on the limestone boulders that I have surrounded the tree. After he had his fill, he climb down and followed me back to the barn.

Phoenix is a Boer goat. He is incredibly sweet and affectionate. He loves to be brushed, stroked, hugged, and gives sweet kisses. Phoenix will follow me while I’m doing my chores and is known for nibbling on visitors t-shirts, pants and backpacks. He has such a darling face and docile personality.

Providing Phoenix with a safe haven, the love that he craves and all of nutrition necessary to keep him healthy is a job that I take seriously. I founded Gentle Acres a little over five years ago. I have been caring for these rescued angels by myself for all of that time. It is a 365 day a year commitment, with no days off and no vacations. The financial burden has taken its toll as well. If you are able to help me continue to nurture & love the 67 angels who call GAAH their home, I would be beyond grateful. Your support is what keeps our doors open. Please help if you can. We are a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and all donations are 100% tax deductible. With love - Jeanine 💜

Swimming with friends makes the latest heatwave much more fun. Pools are filled, fans are on, piggies are in their mud wallows, and cooler temperatures are coming on Thursday, along with a lot of rain. Until then, everyone is enjoying cool watermelons and being misted with the hose. 🍉

Today was our first hot day of the season. With temperatures expected over the next few days near 90 degrees, our piggies need some extra attention to keep cool. Pigs don’t have sweat glands and therefore need to cool themselves off in pools and mud baths. The mud also serves as a sunscreen to protect their delicate skin. Because Winston & Clementine were out in the pasture today, I wet down the red clay up at the barn for an impromptu mud bath. They have plenty of shade & wallows down in their shed enclosure, but today they had a special adventure.

I have been seeing so many posts lately that have been documenting unimaginable abuse & cruelty to every creature imaginable. One in particular has shaken me to my core. Please remember that all creatures deserve kindness, compassion & respect. If you see something, please report it. Be a voice for the voiceless. 💜

This morning I found two baby barn swallows on the concrete in the barn. They had fallen from a nest up in the rafters of the hay loft. Sadly, the other baby did not survive the fall. This tiny one was cold & motionless when I picked her up. As soon as I brought her up to the house to put her under a heat lamp, she began to move. I made a mixture of critical care newborn bird formula with Nutri-Drench vitamin drops and Bach Rescue Remedy StressRelief drops. The first feeding she was ravenous. I also gave her some subcutaneous fluids with an insulin syringe & needle. Thankfully she became more stable and defecated while I let her rest. She was not as hungry for her second feeding, but she seems to be doing better each time I tend to her.

Unfortunately I cannot reach the nest up in the rafters to return her to her mother & father. There are numerous other barn swallow nests throughout the barn and I might see if another nest will accept her. Until then, she is safe, warm and has food in her belly tonight. Please remember that all creatures deserve to be treated with kindness, compassion and respect. Please Be Kind to Every Kind! 💜
