Don’t plant peas or soybeans in the summer they will never make it is what I hear from most new clients.

Well your deer density and plot size will decide that. A well maintained deer herd, a big enough acreage plot and a few special measures at germination will definitely put you in the winning direction for success.

I want the deer to eat as much peas as they can stand June July and august.

I also want them to eat as much annual clovers, awnless wheat heads and nutritional native forage the months of February march April and may.

And don’t forget about sept Oct Nov Dec January fall food plots.

It’s all puzzle pieces and when they fit together to provide year round whitetail nutrition it’s a beautiful thing.

I decided to lightly disturb the soil in early February at this location just to see what kind of native seed was in the seed bank with hopes of producing some free deer food/nesting broading cover.

Well the end result is a field dominated with golden rod but also has minimal ragweed, pokeweed, black berries hiding in the mix just to name a few.

Two hens successfully nested and hatched in very close proximity and visit the field daily with the poults to catch bugs and do what turkeys do.

It’s not a big beautiful field dominated with ragweed but it will do for now.

I want the deer to stay out until established but I also want the deer to eat as much as they desire the months of June,July and august. Almost where I want to be with this plot.

If you can get them established and the plot is of reasonable size (3.5 to 7 acres) the longevity and the amount of deer it will feed is astonishing.

I’ve had iron clay peas go all the way into November with many deer feeding in them daily.

Thankful for the recent rain showers.

I really thought we where done with the turkeys for the year but when your daughter has 2 unfilled tags and says she wants to go and it happens to be a youth day you stop all previous obligations and take her.

Well I’m glad we decided to go because everything went absolutely perfect and Brooke finally got her first turkey.

She got to see basically everything a Turkey does in the wild and for that I am thankful.

She has a little better understanding of why I’m so obsessed with these game birds now.

We done for real this time……. 🦃
