When families have access to lactation expertise, infants around the globe are more likely to receive safe, reliable nutrition.

As we focus on tackling hunger and securing healthy diets this World Food Day, we recognise the IBCLC and lactation advocate’s critical role in helping families to successfully initiate and sustain breastfeeding.

To learn more about actionable steps that secure a safe food supply for infants, watch the recent webinar from the Global Centre for Lactation Training (GCLT)®—First Feed to Food Security: The Power of Breastfeeding—available at gclt.org/webinar-first-feed and discounted to $10 through Sunday, October 18, 2026.

Today, we remember the babies, honour the families, and hold space for grief.

World Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day is a reminder that lactation care from an IBCLC® does not end when a family experiences loss. Lactation support is an essential part of pregnancy and infant bereavement care, whether a parent chooses to suppress, express, or donate their breast milk.

You are not alone. Join the Wave of Light the evening of October 15 by lighting a candle at 19:00 in your time zone in honour and memory of the children who are no longer with us.

On Indigenous Peoples’ Day (US), we pause to honour the rich histories, vibrant cultures, and lasting influence of Indigenous peoples worldwide. As stewards of sacred traditions—such as breastfeeding practices, Indigenous Milk Medicine, and the First Foods—Indigenous lactation advocates continue to nourish both body and spirit.

IBCLCs are on the frontline of the peripartum period and often see patients in the gaps between maternal and paediatric well visits. A family’s mental health is intertwined with their breastfeeding experience and IBCLCs play a vital role in providing evidence-based care that is focused on whole-family wellness. To learn more about the role of the IBCLC® in mental health, visit the IBCLC Commission at ibclc-commission.org/ibclc-information/clinical-competencies-for-ibclcs.

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month we honour:
• survivors and their breastfeeding journeys;
• families navigating cancer while breastfeeding; and,
• the power of informed and compassionate IBCLC® care.

As experts in human lactation, IBCLCs are uniquely positioned to help families understand how breastfeeding reduces the risk of breast cancer and to support families affected by breast cancer.
