CW: racism, violence
We here at the Filipino Cultural Association of George Mason University are, and will ALWAYS be, in solidarity with the Black community especially in times like these.
The murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and the countless others over the years have also left us in anger and in grief. They were murdered as a result of the continuous racism and targeting perpetuated by White supremacy that has been present in our society for far too long. During the current pandemic, we have asked for the support from all communities in our fight against the racial abuse of Asians and Asian-Americans amidst the COVID-19. To stand here and be in the position we are in, it is wrong to stay silent. Now we must stand with the Black community in their continued protest against racism and institutionalized violence.
As Filipino American youth, we should not be afraid to address anti-Blackness within our communities. We should not be afraid to acknowledge that although we have different struggles from our Black brothers and sisters, we share the same enemy: white supremacy. It is our responsibility to investigate the ways we fall prey to complicity. Don’t ignore this because it makes you uncomfortable. Speak out. Educate yourself and your peers. Be an ally.
We also want to acknowledge the many Black and African heritage organizations and leaders at Mason. They have been doing the work, fighting the fight, and have served the needs of their community for years. We are all part of a larger community and we want to carry this with you. We hear you, we see you, we are here to listen, we are ready to act, and we are open to learn how we can best be in community with you.
