A ramp is so much more than a way in and out of a home. It can be life-changing!

For a homeowner living with disabilities, something as simple as getting out the front door can be a daily challenge. A wheelchair ramp can open up a world of possibilities—making it easier and safer to get to medical appointments, visit friends and family, and enjoy greater freedom and independence.

Building a ramp takes skill, teamwork, creativity, and plenty of hard work. Our volunteers enthusiastically rise to the challenge, bringing their talents together to create solutions that make a real difference—all at no cost to the homeowner.

And while the impact on the homeowner can be life-changing, our volunteers get something pretty special in return: the joy and satisfaction of knowing they've made life better for a neighbor in need.

That's what Rebuilding Together is all about. Neighbors helping neighbors, one home at a time.

For one local mom working hard to make ends meet while raising her three sons, both entrances to her home had become safety concerns. The back steps needed to be replaced, and rotted decking at the front door made that entrance unsafe, too.

We brought together a volunteer team with some terrific carpentry skills to tackle both problems. They built sturdy new steps at the back door and repaired the damaged decking at the front—giving this family two safe, secure ways to come and go.

Our team also added brighter LED bulbs to the bathroom, added a new bathroom exhaust fan, and repaired an interior door.

Thanks to our skilled volunteers, this mom has fewer worries—and four members of our community have a safer home.

Many older homes in our area were built without railings on the exterior steps. Decades later, those steps can make simply getting in and out of the house difficult—and increase the risk of a fall.

Our skilled volunteers have perfected strategies for adding sturdy metal railings to all kinds of existing steps and entryways. It’s a practical modification that can make a big difference, giving homeowners something secure to hold onto every time they enter or leave their home.

It’s just one of the many ways our volunteers use their skills and ingenuity to help our neighbors live more safely and independently at home.

Sometimes a few well-placed repairs can make a big difference.

Our volunteers recently helped an older homeowner who wants to continue living safely and independently in the home they love. The team installed grab bars for added stability and repaired an exterior railing to make coming and going safer.

It was a great example of what Rebuilding Together-AFF volunteers do best—working together, sharing their skills and finding practical solutions that help our neighbors age safely in place.

Small repairs. Great teamwork. A safer home.

A grab bar. A secure handrail. One less tripping hazard. Small changes can make a big difference in preventing falls and helping people stay safe at home.

September is Falls Prevention Awareness Month, but fall prevention is a year-round focus at Rebuilding Together-AFF. Our volunteers make practical safety and accessibility improvements that help older adults, people living with disabilities, and families with limited resources live more safely and independently in their homes.

For one Arlington homeowner who is visually impaired and uses a wheelchair, getting from his home to the car for a medical appointment had become a major challenge.

He lives on the basement level of his home because it provides level access to the outdoors. But from there, his spouse or caregiver had to push his wheelchair across the grass to reach the sidewalk and car—a struggle that could take as long as 45 minutes.

Our staff and volunteer team leaders knew a safe, accessible path could make an enormous difference.

Over three work days, 18 volunteers contributed more than 100 hours to build a wooden walkway. The project began with the hard work of excavating dirt and rocks and installing pressure-treated wooden supports. Volunteers returned to install the walkway decking, then came back for a final day to coat the surface with paint containing no-slip grit for added safety.

Now, instead of struggling across uneven grass, the homeowner and those who assist him have a stable, accessible route between his home and the sidewalk.

This is what accessibility can mean in everyday life: less struggle, greater safety, and an easier path to getting where you need to go.

A tremendous thank you to all 18 volunteers who put in the time, muscle and care to make this major accessibility modification possible.

After nearly 40 years in her townhome, this 71-year-old homeowner wanted to continue navigating her home safely and confidently. Because she uses a cane for stability, sturdy handholds are especially important.

Our RT Express volunteers installed grab bars and added second railings to two sets of stairs, giving her support on both sides. On the basement stairs, there was nowhere to securely attach the new railing at the bottom—so our team built and installed a sturdy post to make it work safely. They also installed a smoke/CO alarm and a fire extinguisher to help protect her at home.

It’s a classic RT Express project: practical repairs, skilled volunteers, and thoughtful solutions that make a longtime home safer for the person who lives there.
