FAIRFAX OVERWHELMS PWC IN TWO-GAME SWEEP FOR DISTRICT 10 TITLE IN 10-12 MAJORS SOFTBALL
By BEN NUCKOLS
Lila Scharpf took the mound with a big lead and knew what to do.
Pounding the strike zone and backed by a solid defense, Lila threw a tidy 50-pitch complete game in the opener of a three-game series to determine the District 10 champion in 10-12 Majors softball, and Fairfax Little League breezed to a two-game sweep of Prince William County in Gainesville on Saturday, June 13.
The final scores: 17-2 and 15-1 in favor of the scalding Fairfax Fire, who advanced to the state tournament that starts July 2 in Abingdon.
Fairfax manager Frank Pescatello sent another ace to the mound in the clincher. Danielle Domer gave up two hits and one run in her 58-pitch, four-inning complete game, striking out seven batters and walking none. Danielle also had an RBI single, one of eight hits by the relentless Fire lineup.
In the first game, Fire’s opportunistic offense gave Lila plenty of run support before she threw a pitch. Zoe Flores led off with a walk, stole second, moved to third on a bloop single by Sofia Pescatello and stole home to put Fairfax on the board. Faith Case followed with a double to bring Sofia home.
Fairfax drew three more walks in the inning and got singles from Ellie Yun and Fiona Houff to hand Lila a 7-0 lead.
In the bottom half, Lila gave up a leadoff single but maintained her poise and let her defense work. She struck out the next batter and, with a runner on third, recorded outs on a fly ball to center fielder Danielle Domer and a grounder that third baseman Faith gunned to Fiona at first.
Fairfax added six more runs in the second, when Sofia, Faith, Ellie and Fiona each picked up their second hits of the game. Fiona finished 3 for 3.
In the second game, Ellie tripled and scored twice, Emma Langan had two hits, Sofia had two RBIs, and Michalyn Pruismann and Leora Hansen each scored two runs.
With runners on second and third in the bottom of the fourth inning of the second game, Danielle and catcher Rebecca Perez – who backstopped both games – connected for a called third strike on the outside corner, and Rebecca calmly tossed the ball back to Danielle before the district champions jogged to the third-base line to begin their celebration.
