Dolly Parton grew up in a one-room cabin in the Smoky Mountains, one of twelve kids, without running water or electricity. She talked about that childhood often, and never with shame. Poverty was never who she was. It was just a circumstance she lived through.

That distinction matters. The people we work with at FACETS are parents, neighbors, coworkers, kids — full people navigating a hard circumstance, not defined by it. Dolly understood that instinctively, and she spent her life trying to make sure fewer people had to fight their way through it alone.

The cold isn't the only dangerous season.

We picture homelessness in winter: coat drives, warming centers, emergency shelters. But summer's heat is just as dangerous. Think pavement burning through worn-out shoes, or dehydration for someone sleeping in a car with no shade.

1,342 Fairfax students were identified as homeless this past school year. Now school's out, and many are riding out the heat in a car, a motel room, or doubled up with another family.

Homelessness doesn't take the summer off. Neither does FACETS. Your gift today protects neighbors from the weather, in any season.

Yesterday, we were honored to be a recipient of HomeAid National Capital Region's annual Builders for Babies Drive. Their team delivered two truckloads of diapers and wipes in support of our mission to serve our youngest neighbors and their caregivers.

For the families we serve, a gift like this offers real relief — one less thing to worry about, so they can focus on building stronger futures for their little ones.

This winter, Fairfax County saw 35 days at or below freezing. On those nights, our neighbors experiencing homelessness needed somewhere safe to go.

Because of you, they had one.

From Thanksgiving weekend through April 1, 42 faith congregations opened their doors every single night and welcomed neighbors ages 20 to 82 in from the cold. This season, FACETS also expanded into the Bailey’s Crossroads region, growing our incredible network of partners.

Since 2004, this program has helped prevent deaths and serious injuries among our most vulnerable neighbors. Behind every congregation is something even more powerful. Volunteers who show up year after year, offering warmth, care, and dignity when it matters most.

February is Black History Month—a time to reflect on history and a moment to act today.

In Fairfax County, Black residents make up 11% of the population, yet nearly half of those experiencing homelessness. This disparity is not accidental. It reflects long-standing inequities rooted in policies and systems that continue to shape access to housing and stability.

The need is growing, and FACETS is growing to meet it. This year, Fairfax County entrusted FACETS with Bailey’s Shelter and Supportive Housing, expanding our work in shelter, outreach, healthcare, and stabilization services.

This weekend’s snow and freezing temperatures brought a sharp surge of neighbors to Bailey’s Shelter looking for warmth and safety. Right when it mattered most, World Central Kitchen stepped in at a critical moment with 200 hot meals prepared by local restaurant Peruvian Brothers—support that could not have come at a better time.

With Bailey’s operating beyond normal capacity, FACETS staff are working around the clock to ensure everyone receives food, warmth, and dignified care. Our hypothermia host churches are also under strain as shelter demand continues to rise across the region.

We are deeply grateful for the community’s support—yet this moment requires more.
