HAITI- Ayiti Cheri!
So I am off to Haiti again on Wednesday for the first time in almost two years. As many of you know I spent four years in Haiti immediately following the 2010 earthquake and worked tirelessly on a long term photo essay and documentary that in turn raised money for my foundation Up from Under . I have waited to return because through my experience I learned a lot about myself and about this country and people whom I love. I needed time to digest all the information, process, do some soul searching, re-adjust my own life and then go back in when I was ready, with a fresh perspective and an open and willing heart. I will be visiting my friends who I miss terribly, but also working with my dear friend Taryn and her organization Children's Nutrition Program of Haiti. This organization is helping to improve the health and development of Haitian children and mostly those suffering from malnutrition. In their words "CNP works to achieve our mission, in partnership with our Haitian sisters and brothers, by focusing on the person in the family who will have the biggest impact on the health and future of the child-the mother. Healthy mothers will be able to raise healthy children."
I have known Taryn for a while now and we both have very similar ideas on what is the most beneficial in sustainable aid and our participation as an international community. I am so proud of her and the work she has been doing in country and in part has helped drop the severe malnutrition rate in Haiti to 4.1% (According to a 2013 survey by UNICEF)
I am looking forward to providing my services again to help raise awareness and participation in the ongoing battle to get this country on it's feet once again. Haiti is an incredible place with a resilience like non other I have every experienced.
Please be praying for my safety and strength for the next few weeks! One Love....
