Hamkae Center

Hamkae Center We organize Asian Americans in Virginia to achieve social, racial and economic justice.

Hamkae Center develops holistic programs and campaigns that are guided by community members and meet immediate needs, while building Asian American community power to make long-term systemic changes that address the root causes of these needs and centers human connections. We believe that Asian Americans, low-income folks, working class people, immigrants, people of color, LGBTQ individuals, and other targeted people must work together in order to have a more just and equitable Virginia for all.

Hamkae means Together. For an immigrant mom, it meant finding a home for their family. 🌸 🏠

When Jane first arrived in an unfamiliar country, she felt overwhelmed and alone and only speak Korean. But because of your support, she found a “resourceful organization” that helped her family access healthcare, job opportunities for their child, and her driver privilege card.

This is the heart of Hamkae in May. We aren’t just translating flyers; we are building a supportive community where language is part of the resource.

Our Impact in Action:
Direct Support: 276 healthcare referrals, 57 citizenship applications this past year, and 61 small businesses connected to grant resource.
Systems Change: Successfully passed HB 1278 to ensure every Virginia parent can understand their child’s education progress in translated documents.

The Match: We are raising $5,000 to ensure the continuece support to Jane’s are the norm, not the exception. Donate today and your gift is matched 1:1!
Support our community and your neighbor. Together.

The Hamkae Center Advisory Board is thrilled to announce the appointment of our new Executive Director, Mitchell Yangson. Mitchell brings a decade of nonprofit leadership experience and a proven track record in serving and empowering the Asian American community in Virginia through community education, organizing, public policy advocacy, and civic engagement.

Prior to joining Hamkae Center, Mitchell was the Director of the Asian American Pacific Islander Civic Engagement Collaborative (ACE) of New Virginia Majority. There, Mitchell capped his 2026 tenure by guiding the DMV Drivers Alliance to landmark legislative wins in Virginia and Maryland. The victory concluded a three-year campaign, establishing new laws that regulate pay transparency and protect AAPI and BAMEMSA rideshare drivers from arbitrary account terminations. During his decade of work with ACE, he drove electoral strategies and grassroots organizing to achieve meaningful change in Virginia politics and the Asian American community.

Prior to moving to Virginia in 2015, Mitchell managed collections, curated exhibits, and led collaborative programming as a librarian for the Filipino American Center at the San Francisco Public Library.

Hamkae Center Advisory Board Chair Chris Wodicka remarked: “As an advisory board, we were deeply impressed by Mitchell’s years of experience as an organizer and nonprofit leader and his commitment to supporting Asian American communities across the Commonwealth. I am excited to work alongside Mitchell during this leadership transition as we embark on this next phase of our organization. The Hamkae Center Advisory Board also expresses our deep gratitude to Hamkae Center’s Interim Executive Director, Lan Nguyen, for her excellent service and support during the transition period.”

Hamkae Center is an affiliate of NAKASEC, a network of Asian American community-based organizations across six states. “We are so excited Hamkae Center chose an experienced organizer as their new Executive Director,” commented Becky Belcore, Co-Director of NAKASEC. “We look forward to Mitchell’s leadership in Virginia and within the NAKASEC Network.”

“I am deeply honored to step into the role of Executive Director and guide Hamkae Center into its next chapter of growth and change. With staff, community members, volunteers and other stakeholders, we will continue to organize, defend our immigrant communities, and build the collective power necessary to shape a more equitable Virginia,” shared Mitchell Yangson, Hamkae Center’s new Executive Director.

Hamkae = Together 🌸

This AANHPI Heritage Month, we are celebrating our roots, culture and diverse language that shape our community by ensuring every neighbor has access to the resources they need.

We’re raising $5,000 to expand bilingual direct service and outreach to more AAPI communities and distribute 5-language graphic resource flyers (English, Korean, Vietnamese, Chinese, and Urdu) across the Commonwealth. The best part? Our board is pledge to match 1-to-1 up to $4,150. Your $25 becomes $50 and helps an immigrant mom and child received bilingual immigration legal assistance!
