During last week’s meeting, we were joined by Uyghur activist Kabir Qurban where he shared his experience advocating for the Uyghur people, and gave us an understanding on different ways we can help the ongoing conflict. GMU STAND would like to thank Kabir for joining us once again for this discussion!

GMU STAND is happy to share today’s news about the U.S. re-committing their humanitarian support for the ! We wholeheartedly support this stance and would like to celebrate by highlighting the work of Rohingya Youth activists we’ve been able to get in touch with over the year. On this same note, we would also like to bring attention to the IDPs trapped within . Many are receiving little to no humanitarian aid due to the Burmese government’s blockade. Our thoughts are with them as they should not be forgotten.

Join us this Saturday at 7:30 PM EST for a community conversation between Black Americans and Burmese Americans to listen to what the Black experience of growing up in America is like, and to gain a better understanding about the black lives matter movement. Please invite your friends and family! Everyone is welcome.

We, the officers of GMU STAND, sincerely apologize for this delayed response but would like to make it known that we STAND in solidarity with the black community and Black Lives Matter. As an organization that usually focuses on atrocities abroad, it is important that we also take responsibility to address the issues occurring within our own home country of America too. We will be hosting an online event soon to open up discussion within our own immigrant cultural communities (open to the public), so stay tuned for a BLM Zoom panel-conversation featuring Black youth!

Our chat with Sirazul Islam yesterday was very informative and inspirational! We learned a lot about his life growing up in a refugee camp, his activism work, the Rohingya Crisis, and how climate change and COVID-19 would exacerbate current conditions at Cox’s Bazar. We were ultimately reminded about the power of our voices, and privilege as American citizens, to speak up on such issues which affect not only the Rohingya and other persecuted ethnic groups within Burma but those all over the world experiencing the same threats under the oppression of state-sponsored genocide
