Reading Tip: High Frequency Words- these are also known as “sight words” because they are words that appear most often in books, printed materials and spoken language. These are words children should be able to easily recognize and read with automaticity. There are tons of ways to teach your kids high frequency words such as using flash cards, poster board, popsicle sticks, magnetic letters, shaving cream, spelling games, etc. All of these strategies are great however, I feel one of the most effective ways to teach children high frequency words and make it stick, is to teach them in context. You can do this by having them read books with high frequency words and use high frequency words in sentences. Doing this helps bridge the gap between knowing the word in isolation and understanding how it works while reading. In this video, my youngest daughter who just started Pre-K is reading a book from a set of books we have in our home library that intentionally introduces one to three high-frequency-words at a time while also adding in others as a review. Book sets like the one pictured in this video can be found on sites like Amazon and you can find printable high-frequency word passages online or, you can actually make your own. One of the most IMPORTANT things you can do to help your child with reading is to read to them, with them and build in independent reading time into your kiddos’ daily schedules.
