Reading Tip: Reading is so much more than just being able to decode words in a text. It is important to start practicing with your children early to help them develop comprehension skills. As children get older, what they are expected to read becomes more complex. Did you know that in school, by the time a child reaches third grade, they are no longer “learning to read”, they are “reading to learn”? Reading Tip: Read Books About New Experiences- Reading books about new experiences are great tools to use as conversation starters! After reading, ask your child: "Have you ever felt nervous about trying or doing something new?”“What helped you feel brave?” “What do you think it will be like on your first adventure to_________?” “What do you think you will need for_______? These conversations help children strengthen their reading comprehension, make personal connections to stories, and develop emotional awareness. Every book opens a door to a new world, a different perspective, and a deeper appreciation for the beautiful cultures that make up our communities! In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 – October 15), let's encourage our young readers to explore children's books that highlight the rich history, vibrant traditions, languages, and incredible contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities. Representation matters! When children see themselves, their families, and their cultures reflected in books, it helps foster a sense of pride, belonging, and identity. In addition, reading stories about different cultures helps children develop empathy, understanding, and respect for others. With the exploration of books featuring Hispanic traditions, history, and experiences, it expands children's vocabulary, knowledge, and appreciation for the world around them. Every child deserves to see themselves in the pages of a book, and every child deserves the opportunity to learn about cultures beyond their own! As Hispanic Heritage Month comes to an end, let's remember that cultural appreciation doesn't end when the celebration does. We can continue sharing diverse stories and amplifying diverse voices all year long!

Reading Tip: The Importance of Alphabet Books- Reading alphabet books helps children recognize letters, learn their names, and become familiar with their shapes. Because many alphabet books connect letters to their sounds, this enables children to develop phonemic awareness and help to lay the foundation for reading and spelling. In addition, colorful illustrations, repetition, and engaging stories make learning letters enjoyable, while also building confidence and a love for reading as well! If you have a baby, toddler, preschooler and/or early reader, always remember that every letter learned is another step towards becoming a confident reader in the future! Today I had the honor of being a guest author at The Christian Jubilee Full Word Baptist Church in Decatur, GA. I definitely don’t think it was a coincidence that I was asked to be apart of this special program on what would’ve been my brother’s 40th birthday. I can’t think of a better way to honor my brother and his legacy by being able to walk in my purpose and share his story. Thank you to my dear sweet library friend, Mrs. Marshall and my dear big brother, former colleague and friend, Coach Marshall for the invitation. The whole entire congregation were so loving, welcoming and supportive of me and my family. Thank you to everyone who purchased books and donated to my organization. Thank you to the kids for listening to my stories and interacting which is the part I love most whenever I do story times. To top it off, Reverand Marshall preached a very moving message today. The message I received for this week, and just going forward in life is to continue to use my gifts to give God the glory! He gave them to me and I owe it all to Him!

Let Them See Men Reading: There is something EXTRA special about a dad reading! It is so powerful when children have positive male role models, and especially those who engage in reading to and with them! When dads take an active role in literacy, they help inspire a love for books, build confidence, and show children that reading is for EVERYONE. I am so appreciative of my children’s school for recognizing the importance of fatherhood and literacy, and making a decision to have a Dads READ initiative where Dads come and read to the students. Yesterday my husband got a chance to read to our baby girl’s PreK class and it was a real treat! As we reflect on this special moment, I would like to send some encouragement to all of the men out there. Whether you’re a dad, grandfather, uncle, or another positive male role model, continue to show up for your kiddos and prioritize reading to them. Your presence makes a HUGE impact!
