Wait… why is my HEN crowing like a rooster? 🐔🎤

Believe it or not, it happens more often than people think. Chickens have some fascinating biology, and sometimes hens start sounding (and even acting) like roosters. Here are a few reasons why:

1️⃣ Flock leadership
If there’s no rooster around, the most dominant hen may step up as the leader. She might start crowing, mounting other hens, and acting like the flock’s protector.

2️⃣ Hormonal changes
If a hen’s o***y stops functioning due to age, illness, or injury, her hormone levels can shift. This can cause rooster-like behaviors—including crowing.

3️⃣ Partial s*x reversal
Chickens normally have two ovaries, but only the left one works. If it fails, the right g***d can sometimes develop into a testis-like organ that produces male hormones.

4️⃣ Rooster-like features
Some hens with hormonal changes develop larger combs, longer feathers, or more aggressive behavior—similar to a rooster.

5️⃣ Egg laying may stop
When these hormonal shifts happen, the hen often stops laying eggs while displaying more male traits.

Nature always finds ways to keep things interesting around the coop. 🌱

🥚 COOP QUESTION OF THE DAY 🥚

Three eggs.

Two are decoys we place in the nesting boxes.
One is the real deal from our hens this morning.

Fun farm fact:
Chickens are encouraged to lay where they see eggs already sitting. It signals, “This is a safe nesting spot.” So we use fake eggs to guide good laying habits and keep them from hiding eggs in random corners of the coop. 🐔🌿

Now here’s the twist…

I genuinely can’t tell which one is real just by looking.

The only way to know for sure?

We were able to deliver 30 care packages to Shinnah Haven, an organized tent camp in Douglasville that provides shelter for unhoused men. Each package included essentials like socks, hand warmers, snacks, first aid kits, and more to help them through the winter. Your kindness is making a real difference.
