"The children love to do these things [practical life activities] for themselves" - Maria Montessori
Food preparation lessons build skills in executive functioning, concentration, fine motor development, grace and courtesy, and vocabulary. Also, in food prep, such as with banana slicing, students divide a whole into parts.
Food prep involves a carefully sequenced series of steps and builds an independent child who can confidently prepare a snack.
Steps (first taught to the student by the Montessori teacher)
-Put on an apron
-Wash hands
-Get the tray from the shelf
-Sit down & prepare food
-Plate the food (use toothpicks)
-Offer friends the food
-Clean up & wash dishes when done
-Place the work back on the shelf
-Take off apron
