MSFC members and angling community,

Like to officially welcome in Garreth Durst as the new Vice President of MSFC. Garreth’s hard work ethic and passionate fly fishing background will be a huge asset to helping the group expand its growth in the Fairbanks sport fishing community.

I look forward to working with Garreth as well as the rest of the board so we can continue to the group’s growth into the 2026-2027 fall-winter offseason.

“I grew up in the mountains of West Virginia, where I started fly fishing for trout around the age of 10 and haven’t put the fly rod down since. I’ve been in Fairbanks for nearly two years, serving on active duty in the Air Force and enjoying everything the outdoors of Alaska have to offer. I love getting out on the water, meeting new people, and sharing what I’ve learned about fly fishing with others. Outside of work, I spend most time with my wife and 3 year old, who often joins me on my fishing adventures.”

- Garreth

With kids back in school, now is a great time to keep them motivated with exploring the creativity that comes with fly tying. With some fingernail polish, the kiddos can paint their own jigheads and make unique forms of art. Here is a brief clip I filmed as an example!!

1/16 ounce round Kalin’s jighead unpainted for reference.

We are still working on a date for first tying get-together of the fall season as summer ends. Aiming for Sunday, September 20th at UAF Wood Center. Stay tuned. Will update this post in next day or so

Hi all, unfortunately, no other folks came forward during the nomination period for officers, leaving MSFC short-handed as has been the case for the past several seasons. This translates to fewer events and a lesser capacity to embark on outreach (e.g., fly casting at schools) and an inability to host big, fun productions like fly fishing film festivals. That being the case, we encourage members to come forward with any ideas and reach out to us to set up any events that you would like to see/lead throughout the winter. We will not be able to setup meetings and presentations as has been done in the past, without greater member participation.

It is our hope that we can keep MSFC alive as a community for Interior AK fly fishers and a resource for the public for fishing education, but there is a risk that the club could dwindle away similar to the now-defunct Fairbanks chapter of Trout Unlimited.

If anyone is interested in the open Vice President position, we would gladly accept someone to pick up that role at any time throughout the season. The Vice President usually assists the President with setting up events and the Kid's Fly Fishing Camp, and any other responsibilities the person is interested in taking on/pursuing would be great. The VP is a very flexible position and the officer can be as involved as they want to/are able to be.

For the 2026-2027 season, Mike Lunde will be serving as President for another term. Kevin Fraley will stay on as Secretary, and Dave Vick will likely continue as Treasurer. Thanks to these officers for their efforts to keep MSFC afloat!

Enjoy autumn and best of luck out on the water

Hi all,

We hope you have been having a wonderful summer full of fly fishing adventures!

It has been a fairly smoke-free summer and the rivers have been at good levels for fishing. Hopefully the nice conditions will continue into autumn.

This is a call for nominations for MSFC officers for the upcoming 2026-2027 season (September 2026-August 2027). If you are interested in getting involved more with this great club, please email [email protected] with some info about yourself and what you are interested in doing. The officer group would greatly benefit from some new faces and ideas and we encourage anybody with interest, a bit of time, and passion for our local fly fishing community to step forward.

All positions are available, though Mike Lunde has indicated he would be happy to serve as President for another term. Kevin Fraley (Secretary) is interested in staying involved, and Dave Vick will likely continue as Treasurer.

That being the case, we are particularly looking for a Vice President! Ideally this person would have an interest in leveling up after a year or two in the position, but this is not required. The Vice President usually assists the President with setting up events and the Kid's Fly Fishing Camp, and any other responsibilities the person is interested in taking on/pursuing would be great. The VP is a very flexible position and the officer can be as involved as they want to/are able to be.

Also, if anybody has interest in a non-traditional officer role, such as Event Coordinator, Conservation Coordinator, etc. please reach out-we would love to hear your ideas and would be happy to set up a position that fits you.

*Please send us an email at [email protected] if you are interested in serving in a position. The deadline for nominations is September 1*

Thanks and have fun on the water!
