Alaska Farmers Market Association Get connected with other markets and other managers throughout Alaska! Farmers markets are good for farmers and good for the communities they serve.

Farmers markets have experienced a renaissance throughout the nation, and have begun to spring up all over Alaska. While our short growing season and cold climate offers many challenges to our farmers, farmers’ markets are thriving across Alaska. For farmers, farmers markets provide a place where farmers can reconnect with consumers and capture retail dollars for their fresh, high-quality products. For communities, farmers markets are family-friendly, community-building events that bring neighbors together, attract retail activity to surrounding businesses, create forums for civic education and involvement and provide direct access to Alaska’s agricultural bounty.

--AFMA purchased produce from farmers markets to support Anchorage's Free Farm Stand on Thursdays in September.
--We raised $5,000 for our growing Farm to Food Bank fund.
--And we said yes when the Anchorage Coalition to End Homelessness reached out to ask for a produce donation for their meal at Project Homeless Connect on October 26th.

AFMA is here to acknowledge that our local food system has the potential to feed all Alaskans, but our farmers and neighbors can't do it alone. We support our local food system believing that small scale regenerative farmers can change the way our food system serves Alaskans, one carrot at a time.

Buying food from local farmers and businesses allows us to become friends with the people feeding us, it creates jobs for our friends and neighbors, all while contributing to our local economy. In essence, our new “Don’t Buy Food from Strangers” bumper sticker says support your local farmer, buy Alaska Grown, build community connections, and visit your farmers market every week! For 30 years, the Alaska Grown program has been around at the AK Division of Agriculture. The goal is to see that everyone has access to Alaska Grown food and farm products. Alaska’s farmers markets help reach that goal everyday. The more we shop Alaska Grown, the stronger our state's food security becomes. Shop local this week and share your photos of Alaskan Grown goods with us to encourage everyone to help Alaskans feed Alaska by buying local!

This February AFMA and the Division of Agriculture hosted an All Alaska Grown Meal at the Governors Mansion in Juneau. Another example of Alaska Grown all year long!

It’s the International Year of the Woman Farmer. We’re joining in celebrating women who play essential roles in the agriculture sector and often go unrecognized. 48% of Alaska’s farmers are women which is more than the global average of 41%. Women farmers are central to food security, nutrition, and economic resilience. Thank your local farmers today and everyday!

Do you know your market manager? Perhaps they are your favorite part of your market visit. Lots of our Alaska’s farmers markets are run by volunteers. And even for those who are paid, it is a labor of love- arriving early, leaving last, weathering…the weather, committing summer weekends to markets for us all. If you love your market manager, let us know and we will send them a special thank you for making our state's farmers markets the best place to be. Email [email protected] with your favorite Market Manager’s name and their very best market day glamour shot.

Food Access programs do more than just feed people; they reinforce local economies and the agricultural sector, contributing to a robust, resilient food system. They highlight the critical role of farmers’ markets in not only offering fresh produce but also in supporting the livelihoods of Alaskan growers while connecting neighbors with the folks who grow their food and want to nourish their souls.

This summer customers can shop with SNAP and get double the veggies plus an extra $15 in spending power while WIC and Senior shoppers can redeem Farmers Market Nutrition Program benefits on local food across the state.
