Interior Alaska Youth for Environmental Action Interior youth educating, inspiring, and taking action in our communities! This includes drafting and introducing a bill to the state legislature.

Interior Alaska Youth for Environmental Action was originally the page for the local Fairbanks AYEA chapter, FAYEA. FAYEA ceased to exist in fall of 2013; however, there are still dedicated AYEA members in the Interior working to promote AYEA’s annual campaign. This year’s statewide AYEA campaign focus is to “engage and empower Alaskans to take action on climate change.” Statewide AYEA youth (including those in the Interior) will be taking action on this goal through two approaches:
1) Implementing more energy curriculum (namely, the EnergySmart curriculum) in K-12 schools to educate youth about energy
2) Moving state legislators to support and pass climate change legislation. Stay tuned to our page for more campaign updates! If you are at all interested in learning more about AYEA or helping out with our local campaign, please don’t hesitate to contact us! (During FAYEA’s existence, the chapter was involved in a vast array of activities. Its projects included:
1) AYEA's 2010-11 Statewide Wild Alaska Salmon Campaign, in which FAYEA raised awareness towards the threats of large-scale mining and genetically-modified salmon. FAYEA collected a petition of 215 local signatures which was delivered to legislators in Juneau and Washington DC.
2) Extensive work promoting local foods for the 2011-13 Statewide AYEA Local Foods Campaign. FAYEA planted a garden and gave away the produce for two summers to educate the community about self-sufficiency. It also collaborated with organizations such as the John Trigg Esther Library and spearheaded a statewide AYEA effort to publish a local foods cookbook.
3) Volunteering for multiple organizations, including Friends of Creamer's Field, Interior Alaska Green Star, and the Literacy Council of Alaska
4) Trash cleanups along a mile of Farmer’s Loop as part of the Adopt-a-Highway Program
5) Showing an environmental documentaries at the Noel Wien Library)

Major Thanks To: The Northern Alaska Environmental Center, Amanda Huff, Erin Shew, Danielle Flaherty, statewide AYEA staff, and you, for your tremendous support!

Elvie Underwood of Fairbanks published this awesome piece on climate and fiscal crisis today!
"Increased oil subsidies, at the expense of education programs, public safety and environmental protection, will at best provide short-term relief. We must instead focus on protecting our natural resources and developing new revenue, such as renewable energy, that can provide for our economy without jeopardizing the environment. A smart plan for our future can bring us away from this point of no return for both our climate and our budget."

The U.S. will take over chairmanship of the Arctic Council on Friday, a change that will put Alaska at center stage for the council's focus on such things as climate change and Arctic infrastructure.

Twenty-one AYEA teens (including four from the Interior!) met with Governor Walker last Tuesday to advocate for a taskforce on climate change! The meeting was focused, dynamic, and productive, and we presented the Governor with over 1,000 petitions! Better yet, the AFN decided to back our taskforce proposal! Our work is still not over, but we have made enormous progress!
