The Radburn Association

The Radburn Association A Town for the Motor Age Radburn was created in the late 1920s as a "town for the motor age."

Planners designed separate thoroughfares for vehicles and pedestrians with houses laid out along cul-de-sacs and a network of parks away from the main roads.

Before bankruptcy, Radburn's developer built its last houses
On April 7, 1934, in the depths of the Great Depression, the Bergen Evening Record reported surprising news: plans for 17 new houses on Barry Place in Radburn.

The item had a rendering of a model house above the headline “The Home with a Future.’’
If the home had a future, its builder did not.

In less than five months, the City Housing Corp., the original developer of the celebrated “Town for the Motor Age,’’ would file for bankruptcy under its president and founder, the Manhattan real estate developer Alexander Bing.

The Record article contained no hint of that. It reported that a Barry Place model house had been completed, and three similar homes were already under construction on the cul de sac.
The Radburn sales agent is quoted as saying the new homes “can be financed with present day incomes’’ (an allusion to the Depression) and were “created to meet the requirements of the average family during the recovery period,’’ which as it turned out would last another five years.

JOIN US : Sunday, June 7 at 10 AM /Free Walking Tour: Radburn’s parks & the woman who designed them

Last year Radburn’s parkland was recognized as a Level I Arboretum by an international accreditation group. That landscape – especially its towering shade trees – helps make Radburn a National Historical Landmark.

Join us Sunday, June 7 at 10 AM for a free walking tour of two Radburn parks – “A’’ and “B.’’ We’ll see:

Radburn’s largest and oldest trees, as well as its newest – planted by the volunteer/citizens’ Radburn Grounds Committee.
native trees and “exotic’’ trees -- including a female ginko, the world’s oldest tree species. Trees suffering from climate change, and those benefiting.
And we’ll talk about the pioneering female landscape architect who “turned a farm into a park’’ – Marjorie Sewell Cautley.

The tour lasts 2 hours and covers less than a mile, with several sit-down stops. To reserve a space, email [email protected] or call/text 201 286 9577.

Welcome to The Radburn Association 2026 Pool Season!

The pool team is gearing up for another fantastic season, and we can't wait to see you at the pools! Read on for our updated rules and regulations and the May and June pool schedule.

As tradition holds, our pools will open on Memorial Day weekend. This year, we're also offering open swim on Friday, May 22, as schools will be closed, giving the community even more time to enjoy the water.

We're keeping a close eye on the forecast and are hopeful that the rain and cooler temperatures will clear out in time for a wonderful opening weekend.
