The Fair Lawn Fire Department and Glen Rock Fire Department are pleased to announce that we are accepting applications for our Seventh Annual Citizens Fire Academy. The six-week evening class will start on Tuesday October 7th and will give participants a chance to see what being a firefighter is all about. The class is open to all Fair Lawn and Glen Rock residents ages 18 and older. Participants are expected to attend all the sessions. The evening classes start at 7:30 PM and typically end by 9:30 PM

If you have ever wondered what it is like to be a firefighter or perhaps you are thinking of joining the fire department, well then, this class if for you!

This class will give the participants an opportunity to experience what it is like to be a volunteer firefighter. Students will be issued fire gear and perform many of the tasks that firefighters experience including handling hose lines, entering a smoke-filled environment, and using extrication equipment all in safe and controlled environment. This is a hands-on class so participants must be able to exert themselves with a moderate level of physical activity.

There is a limited number of students that can participate and not everyone will be accepted. There is no charge for this class.

The six-week evening class will start on Tuesday October 11th and will give participants a chance to see what being a firefighter is all about. The class is open to all Fair Lawn and Glen Rock residents ages 18 and older. Participants are expected to attend all the sessions.

Our 2021 Citizen Fire Academy is in full swing. After sitting through a lecture about the fire service on the first night, the students got to don their turn out gear and have some hands on fun. The first hands on session allowed students to experience what firefighters do when entering a smoke filled building. With firefighters as partners, they donned Self Contained Breathing Apparatus and searched through a building with simulated smoke. The second hands on session involved students learning about engine company operations. This is the team that goes in and extinguishes the fire. Students got a chance to learn how to operate different hose lines. They also got a chance to open up a fire hydrant that would be used to supply a fire engine with water. Finally, they got to view the job of the pump operator.

The Citizens Fire Academy still has some open spots for our fall class. The CFA will give participants the opportunity to see what it is like to be a firefighter. Students receive full turnout gear and go through a number of different firefighting scenarios including search and rescue, engine company operations, ladder company operations. In addition, students will have an opportunity to use the Jaws of Life on a simulated automobile accident. The six week class meets on Tuesdays starting October 5. This is a chance opportunity for people who have been considering joining the fire department and want to see what is involved. It is also a good class for those who have always had that childhood dream to be a firefighter.

The Fair Lawn Fire Department and Glen Rock Fire Department are pleased to announce that we will be hosting our 3rd Citizens Fire Academy this year. This is after a one year absence due to Covid. The class will run on Tuesdays evenings for 6 weeks starting on October 5th. Space will be limited. Please keep an eye on this page over the next few weeks to hear about the application process.

TIME IS RUNNING OUT

Applications to attend the first Fair Lawn Fire Department’s Junior Fire Academy are due on Tuesday April 20th. This is an opportunity for young adults, ages 16-18 to learn about the fire service. This is an excellent program for those who maybe interested in joining the Fair Lawn Fire Department’s Junior program or those who maybe interested in a career as a first responder.

The program starts on Tuesday April 27 and runs for four week.

Over the course of a 4 week class, you will meet some of the members of the department and get hands on experience of some of the basic jobs we do on a daily basis.

If you are interested, please have you and your parent fill out the application and release forms. Completed forms should be emailed to [email protected] or drop off
the completed applications to the fire department office in Boro Hall. All applicants will received a follow up from our CFA coordinator.

Unfortunately due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Fair Lawn and Glen Rock Fire Departments have both decided not to have a Citizens Fire Academy this year. Fire training requires close interaction and keeping with social distancing guidelines would be impossible. We plan on doing a class next year. Please keep an eye on this page for further announcements on when we plan on having our 3rd Citizens Fire Academy.

Our students continued this week with our Engine Company operations class. The students had an opportunity to flow water out of a hand line. Then they had a chance to see how to open a fire hydrant and supply the engine with water. Finally, they got some time with the pump operator to see what all of those dials and buttons do on the engine. Next week....truck operations!

On Oct 15 we held our first hands on session for our students at our Citizens Fire Academy. Led by Fair Lawn Firefighter/Instructor Marc Sulcolv, the students learned about our Self Contained Breathing Apparatus and had an opportunity to perform simulated searches in our smokehouse facility.
