📚 The pictured school, built in 1878 on Willow Street, is seen around the time of its completion.

Fair Haven’s first school district was formed in 1841, the year a school was reported built on the eastern stem of River Road. A larger room over a store was later used. The former school and lot were auctioned on May 24, 1879, and sold to Forman Smith for $25. The property was expanded and used as a shop by Forman’s sons, local builders, near his home at 867 River Road.

🗝️ McCarter Pond — Fair Haven, NJ

The pond was part of the sprawling estate of Thomas N. McCarter (1867-1955), a significant figure in New Jersey’s public utility history.

The man-made pond was part of the McCarter estate, between Fair Haven Road and Buttonwood Lane. The estate was owned by Thomas McCarter, a prominent lawyer, who built it in the early 20th century. McCarter created this private pond after damming a small creek. In the winter, blocks of ice would be cut from the pond and stored in the family’s icehouse for use in the warmer months.
