Student Spotlight: Emily Beemer!
Emily Beemer, a recent graduate at Lackawanna Trail School District decided to add an NTIEC paid internship to her academic schedule this school year. As we worked to set-up the internship, Emily was a little concerned with how to juggle an additional internship while still working a part-time job at CVS which she wanted to continue with and enjoyed. Just starting at Lackawanna Trail was a program called Lion Mentor, promoted and funded by the Lackawanna Trail Education Foundation. In short, the foundation wants more students to take advantage of work-based learning opportunities and build career contacts through one-on-one professional interviews, job shadowing and internships. Emily was the first Lion Mentor. The plan was for Emily to keep her part time job at CVS and continue to work on her very important workplace soft skills. To extend her career pathway, NTIEC would arrange a one-on-one career interview and a job shadow with a civil engineer. This package would certainly challenge Emily and help her finalize college plans. NTIEC connected Emily with Rebecca Peterson, Founder and President of Folsom Engineering in Mehoopany. Rebecca set up a full day job shadow at Folsom where she met with all departments and visited job sites. The staff at Folsom was impressed with Emily and invited her back for a full day of field work observation. Her second shadow experience went so well that Rebecca offered Emily a paid internship for the summer, until she starts college. All this while working about 20 hours a week at CVS and maintaining her high academic performance at school.
Emily recently graduated from Lackawanna Trail and took full advantage of her work-based learning opportunities and earned an NTIEC student scholarship. She will be attending Penn State University this fall to study Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering. NTIEC would like to thank Emily’s supervisor at CVS, Melissa Tweedy and Mr. Tim Ronchi, Emily’s Guidance Counselor for recommending Emily for supporting her efforts to expand her career pathway. Also, Dr. Michael Murphy, Lackawanna Trail High School Principal for allowing us to pilot the Lion Mentor Program at Lackawanna Trail this year. Lastly, NTIEC has to thank Rebecca Peterson and the entire staff at Folsom Engineering for providing Emily with multiple opportunities.
Emily’s NTIEC paid internship was funded by the Scranton Area Foundation's Innovations Grant. Her job shadowing and field work was sponsored by the Lackawanna Trail Education Foundation via the Lion Mentor Program.
Congratulations Emily, we can't wait to see what you do in the future!
