On October 2, 1969, Michael Novosel flew into an area under intense enemy fire to evacuate wounded soldiers.

Then he went back.

And back.

And back.

15 hazardous extractions in total.

His helicopter was hit by enemy fire. During his final extraction, Novosel himself was wounded.

He still completed the mission.

By the end of it, 29 men had been rescued.

For his actions that day, Michael J. Novosel Sr. would receive the Medal of Honor.

But here's the part of his story that sounds almost impossible:

Novosel's son was also flying medevac helicopters in Vietnam. Michael helped rescue his son's unit after his helicopter was shot down.

Seven days later, his son returned the favor and rescued his father after Michael was shot down.

If Hollywood wrote it, you'd probably call it unrealistic.

It happened.

This is the man behind the Novosel name.

Happy Independence Day from The Novosel Foundation.

Today we celebrate the birth of a nation founded on courage, sacrifice, and the enduring belief that freedom is worth protecting.

As we gather with family and friends, enjoy backyard cookouts, and watch fireworks light up the sky, we also pause to remember those who have answered the call to serve, past and present. Their commitment has preserved the freedoms we often take for granted.

To our military, veterans, first responders, and the families who stand beside them: thank you. Your sacrifices continue to inspire everything we do.

Did you know that during the Vietnam War, rescue helicopter crews often flew directly into enemy fire to recover wounded service members?

These missions were among the most dangerous in military aviation. Crews routinely entered hostile landing zones, hovered under fire, and risked everything to bring Americans home.

The motto of many rescue units was simple:

"That Others May Live."

It's a phrase that perfectly captures the courage and selflessness displayed by generations of military aviators and rescue personnel.

Today, we remember not only the aircraft and missions, but the men and women who willingly put themselves in harm's way for complete strangers.
