Many are asking about how Hurricane Melissa is impacting southern Haiti. Up through yesterday, Sunday, the Cayes area had not received much rain. However, today, Monday, they are getting a lot of rain. We had to close our office and send the staff home in case of local flooding. How long the rain will continue in the Cayes area, we don't know.
Down the coast toward Tiburon and the end of the peninsula (circled on the map), we hear there has been substantial rain and flooding. Our staff is trying to contact our pastors down there, but so far, we have had no communication with them. As soon as it is safe to send out staff down the coast to evaluate the situation, we will do so.
This storm, now a Category 5 hurricane, will be moving very slowly past the end of the peninsula, potentially causing catastrophic damage, flooding, crop damage, and infrastructure devastation.
Please pray for our churches up and down the peninsula, as so many are on or near rivers that flood easily. When it floods like this, it often destroys all the local crops, kills a lot of livestock, and creates serious issues of food scarcity and hunger. Frequently, many people lose their lives trying to cross these raging rivers or are swept away in their homes when they receive little warning of flash floods.
As we gain more specific information over the next couple of days, we will post it here and try to notify our C3 partners about their sister churches and communities. We will also be sure to share how best you can help as needed.
