September 9, 1976 - ESHS Tri-Class reunion gets underway Friday: A Tri-Class reunion of Excelsior Springs High School classes of 1930, 1931 and 1932 will be held here over the weekend. Sightseeing is planned Saturday when a tour will be made of Wyman school, which the three classes attended during their high school days. The class of 1930 transferred from that school to the then new high school on Richmond Street and was the first class to graduate there.

September 11, 1951 - 4 Excelsior gridders to William Jewell: Four former ESHS players have reported for preschool grid practice at William Jewell College as the Cardinals seek their second consecutive Missouri Collegiate Athletic Union Championship. Tom Butler, Bill Taylor, Fletcher DeMint and Buddy Owens are all sophomores and returning lettermen.

Speakers at Opening Ceremony Sept. 10 at 11 a.m.:
Jimmy Schermerhorn
Jimmy Schermerhorn of Nashville, TN., grew up in Excelsior Springs, graduating from ESHS in 1965. He was a U.S. Navy Hospital Corpsman from 1968-1978, continuing to serve honorably following his service in Vietnam. Currently, he is Backstage Artist Coordinator at the Grand Ol’ Opry in Nashville, TN. He was the longtime emcee on the General Jackson showboat. Before his entertainment career, he was a medical equipment repair technician and instructor at AMSCO for 23 years. In 2024, he was recognized for outstanding service to Tennessee, his adopted state, when the governor awarded him the state’s highest civilian honor, the Colonel Aide de Camp award.
Richard “Doc” Russo
“Doc” Russo chairs The Vietnam and All Veterans of Brevard in Brevard County, FL., and has been The Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall manager since 2016. He is on the road with The Wall from April to November. The Albany, N.Y., native majored in electrical maintenance and construction at Hudson Valley College, then enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He was a Hospital Corpsman for Navel Special Warfare Units and for the 3rd Marine Division until 1990, when he was discharged honorably as a HM2/Petty Officer 2nd Class. He earned numerous medals and awards while serving in Panama, Granada, Lebanon and during the first Gulf War. He also oversees the Veterans Transitional Facility and serves on the committee for the annual Florida Veterans Reunion, the country’s longest running Veterans Reunion of its kind.
The Rev. Dr. Ed “Doc” Golden
“Doc” Golden is chaplain for Vietnam Veterans of America, Heart of America Chapter 317, following a long career serving veterans and others. A Vietnam combat veteran, he was a petty officer in the U.S. Navy for 10 years. Now retired from the Blue Springs Police Department and Central Jackson County Fire Protection District, he serves on foundations dedicated to assisting homeless veterans, those in addiction recovery or in hospice care. He has received many awards and citations for his life of service to veterans. A woodworking hobby has enabled him to provide children’s furniture to needy families and institutions. He has provided many scholarships to encourage youths to further their education. An ordained Unity minister, he holds a master’s degree in counseling psychology and a doctorate in clinical psychology.

About the Wall: The Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall is an approximate 3/5-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. Standing six feet tall at its center and stretching nearly 300 feet end to end, the Wall offers a place of reflection and healing. As visitors search for familiar names, the ground before the Wall becomes sacred — a place where memories, gratitude, and hope converge. We hope you will bring friends and families Sept. 9-14 to pay your respects to those who gave their all for our country. P.S. We will have computer access on Piburn Field to assist you in finding those on the Wall.

Plan Your Visit! The Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall will be open 24 hours daily from about 1 p.m. on Sept. 9 (following the exhibit installation) until it leaves early on the morning of Sept. 14 for Plainfield, Ind. Be sure to check out the map in the brochure created for us by the ES Chamber showing the route of the Chamber Trolley to area parking lots throughout each day. The Trolley will be making regular stops at downtown parking lots to bring visitors to The Wall. Note that parking at Piburn Field will be limited to those with disabilities. We’ll also have golf carts to assist in bringing visitors to The Wall site, including one accessible to those with disabilities. And don’t miss the “Not Forgotten” exhibit at the Museum, which focuses on the local stories of the Vietnam War Era. The Museum will have extended hours during this five-day event: It will be open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. each day. This is a free event for all!
