The Smith Island Cultural Center celebrates Smith Island’s unique maritime culture. Massey described Smith Islanders as “an almost amphibious race.” Our displays highlight the life of Island watermen and their families, and presents exhibits on crabbing, traditional watercraft, and an examination of Island life past and present. We also maintain a small but growing collection of genealogies, phot
ographs, and family histories. The film Land and Water, People and Time, was produced by scholars and the Maryland Historical Trust, based on interviews with life-long residents. It provides viewers with a glimpse of life on Smith Island. After your visit, we hope you will take home happy memories, and maybe a book, professional crab knife, or other souvenirs from our well-stocked gift shop.
