Exciting news: Mary Montigny has been recently appointed as a Director on the Highpointers Foundation board! 🎉 She’s excited to help preserve these special places and build even more connections across the country.

Her highpointing adventure began in 1998 when a family friend and mentor, Stony Burk, introduced her family to Mount Washington, which is New Hampshire’s highpoint. After climbing a few more in New England with her mom, she was hooked and dreamed of completing all 50 states someday. That dream came true in 2023 when she became the 38th woman to summit them all!

As a Director, Mary serves as a project coordinator and roving liaison. She and her husband love RV travel, visiting highpoints, and chatting with locals and organizations to spot preservation opportunities. To her, highpointing isn’t just a challenge but it’s also a way to explore more states, experience our country’s incredible diversity, and gain a deeper understanding of what makes America so unique.

Her top tip for beginners: Plan a road trip to knock out a few highpoints with a family member or friend. The memories you’ll make together are priceless.

Fun fact: Mary loves revisiting highpoints! Her first round was so her husband could experience them (he’s now at 41). Then they leash-trained their cats, Cecil and Rusty, who have summited 20 highpoints so far! She even detoured to revisit six while thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail. That’s dedication.

Congrats Mary we’re glad to have you!

If you’ve ever wanted to peek behind the scenes of the Highpointers Foundation, here you go!

We often have Directors and Associate Directors visiting the various highpoints to make sure they’re in good working order. We look for things like fallen branches, washed out paths, damages, or similar things, before bringing it in front of the whole board to determine the path forward should we need to make repairs or allocate money to a project.

The three trip reports shown are from a larger set that Mary Montigny, our Assistant Projects Director, provided to the Foundation as she, her husband, and three pets traveled around the U.S. in their RV visiting highpoints.

“When I arrive at a highpoint, I assess the accessibility, the condition of the current features/man made objects, and the need for new features/man made objects. If I am aware of a small maintenance project that needs to be done, I can bring up the necessary supplies and complete it during my visit.” - Mary

The HPF is proud to celebrate the Foundation’s impact in Millinocket, ME!

Since 2022, we’ve sponsored local high schoolers for Katahdin research (seniors) and trailwork (sophomores/juniors) via the Baxter Youth Conservation Corps (BYCC).
The BYCC is a job training and service-learning opportunity for youth from the Katahdin region of Maine. Many of these students have summited the peak and are inspiring future mountaineers and conservationists to follow in their footsteps.

Meet our 2025 Highpointer Fellows:

🧑‍🔬 Aidan Jamieson (Stearns HS ‘24): From 3 years on BYCC trails to studying native brook trout in the Nesowadnehunk Stream watershed! Aidan is currently at Franklin Pierce pursuing environmental science.

🌿 Noelle Shearer (Junior, homeschooled): Back for her 2nd BYCC season as a Highpointer Fellow, she is diving into wildlife ecology through University of Maine camera surveys. She follows a strong BYCC family legacy with her older siblings Anne and Elliott being former members, along with her sister-in-law Emma who was an inaugural Highpointer Fellow in 2022!

We are grateful for partners like and . Here’s to fostering the next generation of stewards in the region!

Huge shout out to artist Troy Freeman for the amazing work at Hawkeye Point!

To make this happen, the Hawkeye Point Foundation fundraised through grants and donations from local corn seed dealers and other agricultural company sponsors. The local Sterler family was also a huge help during this process. Supporters of the project are being recognized with signage from Pannier Graphics at the base of the silo.

The park was established in 2008. It stands as a monument to the importance of agriculture in the area and provides visitors with a “birds eye” view of the manicured fields of corn and soybeans that surround Iowa’s highest point. The Highpointers Foundation looks forward to the continued partnership with the Hawkeye Point Foundation as well as additional improvements at the Iowa Highpoint in the near future. Stay tuned!

The 2025 Highpointers Klub Konvention was a huge success!

Big thank you to the hosts of this year’s Konvention for all the hard work they put into setting it up. Dave Covill, Denis Dean, and Tim Webb made this meetup a memorable one.

Highpointers enjoyed the comforts of the Creekside Wayfinder in Bishop, CA, which provided a great launching point for nearby activities.

Dozens of highpointers in attendance summited Boundary Peak in Nevada, and a smaller group secured permits and hiked to the top of Mt. Whitney in California. Other optional activities included bird watching and strolling through the nearby Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest.

The Konvention included several social gatherings and the traditional watermelon feast. The and Foundation both held board meetings followed by a banquet where we heard from the keynote speaker

We’re all looking forward to next year’s Highpointers Konvention in West Virginia which will be held from July 23-25, 2026. Mark your calendars because it’s going to be a good one!

Get ready!! The CA Highpointers Konvention is coming up!

After meeting in Rapid City, SD, last year, highpointers from around the country (and world) will meet next week in Bishop, CA for their annual gathering.

The host hotel is the Creekside Wayfinder, a lovely resort with Bishop Creek passing right through it.

Individuals and groups of highpointers will be attempting Boundary Peak, which is Nevada’s highest point, and Mount Whitney, which is California’s highest point. There will also be networking socials, board meetings, a banquet, and much more.

We’re very excited to see everyone and make this Konvention one for the books! ⛰️

Big news from the Highpointers Foundation! 🚨

We’re thrilled to announce that Lucy Westlake ( ), record-setting mountaineer and climate advocate, will be our Keynote Speaker at the Highpointers Club Convention Banquet Dinner on Saturday, September 20, 2025, in Bishop, California!

Lucy’s incredible journey began at age 7 after she summited her first U.S. highpoint, and eventually led to her becoming the youngest American woman to conquer Mount Everest at the age of 18. Her 10-year quest to climb all 50 U.S. state highpoints alongside her father sparked a lifelong passion for adventure and purpose.

As a USC undergraduate studying public policy and data analytics, Lucy blends her mountaineering expertise with cutting-edge climate research, focusing on how black carbon and microplastics accelerate glacier melt. Currently, she’s leading her own field research on Mount Baker and Mount Rainier as a USC Gateway Scholar, investigating pollution’s impact on alpine ecosystems.

As a mountain guide with Alpine Ascents International, Lucy not only leads expeditions but also partners with climate scientists to protect our planet’s fragile glaciers. Her story of grit, purpose, and global impact has been featured on the Today Show, Good Morning America, and in Outside Magazine. We hope you can join us for an inspiring evening as Lucy shares how highpointing shaped her mission to empower others and safeguard our mountains! 🌍💪 🏔️

The Highpointers Foundation has been very busy at Jerimoth Hill in Rhode Island: cleaning up the Highpoint, installing a cable gate at the entrance, clearing and mulching an access lane and pathway, and adding a new bench near the “summit.”

In preparation last year, trees and limbs were cleared to create an access lane and three old sheds were removed.

There is still more work to be done there including addressing some signage issues along the access highway as well as creating a parking area and laying down gravel.

Thanks to the Highpointers Foundation President Dave Covill along with Highpointers Mike Baer, Roy Wallen, Mary Montigny, Olivier Kozlowski and others for coordinating with the state, putting in the hard work on site, and making this all happen! Jerimoth Hill has a whole new look now!
