🌿 A big thank you to everyone who came out for today’s Rotary Park Cleanup! 💙

It was wonderful to spend the morning together helping care for a special community space — and especially great to have our Rotary Youth Exchange students joining us 🙌

A few highlights from the day:

🌱 Cleaning up and caring for Rotary Park together
🛠️ Witnessing someone use a w**d whacker for the very first time 😂
🌭 Wrapping up the event with lunch and good conversation

A special thank you to Jim Schrader for organizing everything, and to our grill master, Greg Tisdale, for keeping everyone well-fed after a morning of hard work 👏

Rotary is all about Service Above Self, and days like today are such a good reminder of what community looks like when people show up and work together ❤️

Already looking forward to the next cleanup!

🌿❤️ Why do people give back?

At this year’s 2026 Rotary Park Cleanup, I asked a few people a simple question:

“Why do you give back?”

And honestly… the answers were really beautiful.

Community doesn’t happen by accident. It happens because people choose to show up, roll up their sleeves, care about where they live, and invest in making things a little better for everyone.

Grateful for everyone who came out to help care for Rotary Park this year — and grateful to be surrounded by people who believe in giving back 😊

👇 Check out the video and let me know:

What inspires YOU to give back?

MIKE DROP?

In a great report, Rotarian Janice Ellis gave us a rundown on a coveted adventure for exchange student Hakumi Matsumoto and Youth Adventures in Leadership (YAIL) graduate Sam Russell, who traveled with Janice to camp at Yellowstone National Park.

This was a bucket list goal for Hakumi, whose year at Everett High School is now ended, and Janice said he was totally thrilled to make the trip. Hakumi now returns home to Kanazawa, Japan.

OUR SECOND SPREE!

Everett Rotarians went shopping again on June 4 with winners of the Rotary Scholarship Shopping Spree, helping five more students choose items they need for a comfortable college start.

With support from the staff at Fred Meyer in Mill Creek, we loaded pillows, Apple watches and much more into the students' balloon-bedecked carts. What a joy to help these young folks step forward on their educational journey.

If you enjoy this good news, please "like" and share it!

And Thanks.

WHEN BUSY = FUN!

Our annual scholarship program includes funds for a Shopping Spree for college-bound students. Working with the Fred Meyer staff in Mill Creek, Everett Rotarians help students shop for . . . you name it: everything from computers to pillow cases, and more.

In our 2026 scholarship program, some 10 students receive $600 each to fund these necessities and smooth the on-ramp to college success. Here are some photos from our June 2 Shopping Spree. More to come as the second round comes through.

GROWTH FOR YOUTH

Our student scholarship program is important, but it's just one part of the Rotary Club of Everett's youth support program. On Tuesday we celebrated two others: Our annual inbound student exchange and the Rotary Youth Adventures in Leadership (YAIL) program.

Each year we support both an inbound and outbound exchange student, as well as a student participating in YAIL.

On Tuesday we welcomed Hakumi Matsumoto, who spent his school year at Everett High School, living with several local host families during his stay. Hakumi gave us a fascinating talk on what he learned and experienced here -- some slides from his speech are included. Hakumi is headed for a visit to Yellowstone National Park before he returns home to Kanazawa, Japan.

We also heard from Sam Russell, who took part in the YAIL program organized by Rotary District 5050 in Maple Ridge, British Columbia in February. Sam's was another well-stated presentation.

The YAIL Program works to help participants become well-rounded individuals with increased perspective and enthusiasm for growth, who can make informed decisions through their leadership journey.

ROTARY DID ALL THIS?

For sure! Our ad in the May 20 Snohomish County Tribune provides lots of information about our long-running student scholarship program -- who contributed to make it happen, why it's important for our community, and who are the winners.

ROTARIANS AT WORK!

Rotarians Kari Petrasek, Paul Stoot and Janice Ellis checked into our May 19 meeting by video from Dajabon, Dominican Republic, where they are helping manage our service projects in the area.

Our club has several projects under way there: Building covered gardens where local people grow food to consume and sell; creating improved sources of drinking water; providing book donations for local students; and creating book storage settings in schools.

These efforts are funded by donations from Rotary Club of Everett, by other area clubs, from Rotary District 5050 and from Rotary International.
