Hopefully you've seen the great posts from Snohomish County Parks & Recreation about the day-use area updates happening at Kayak Point Park. You can help improve the park even more by joining staff and other volunteers at Kayak Point on Sunday, May 17, from 10 AM - 12 PM to remove w**ds, like blackberry and ivy, from the overflow parking lots. Volunteers will get a waived parking fee for the day!
Removing w**ds and installing native plants are all a part of the Snohomish County Healthy Forest Program's plan to protect the forest and Puget Sound's health. Less ivy means less competition for light and water and less damage to the trees that make up the forest. Native plants will provide better food and shelter to the critters that live there. They will also slow down and absorb storm water, store carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, and release oxygen more effectively than invasive w**ds. Not only are the native plants better for the environment, but they're also easier for our operations and maintenance staff to manage! Your help goes a long way, so thank you to all of the volunteers that have supported this project so far.
Register online using the link in our bio. Please wear long sleeves, long pants and sturdy, closed-toe shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty or snagged on prickly plants. Bring a full water bottle and a snack. Hand tools and gloves will be provided, but you can bring your own if you wish. Remember to bring rain gear if rain is in the forecast. We're starting to experience summer weather, so don't forget to wear loose, breathable clothing and to bring water. We should have plenty of shade at this work site.
